How many of you love the Pixies’ Where Is My Mind? For me, the 1988 track off the legendary band’s debut album Surfa Rosa is a timeless classic and an all time favorite. I even have a thin denim jacket with its title on the back, though I haven’t had a chance to wear it yet since it’s been too cold since I purchased it recently. Covers of the song are bountiful, and while I’ll always be devoted to Placebo’s dark thrashing version, I gladly make room in my heart for a fresh approach by Unlike Pluto. The LA producer gives us a Where Is My Mind that we’ve never fathomed we’d hear. It’s a zingy bounding electronic iteration with slivers of Whethan and Oliver Tree running through its airy beats, spry strums, and peppery bounce. You can stream/download Unlike Pluto’s finely crafted cover, here.

I’m a big Pixies fan, but I have never ever experienced their classic song Monkeys Gone To Heaven, or any Pixies song, quite this way. Du Tonc brilliantly transforms it into a summery disco groover, light years away from the original. Mighty Mouse and Matt Van Schie re-creates a new Pixies, one that’s still surfy, but tropical surfy, with cool shades, endless swag, and a dreamy sleekness which has utterly obliterated the PIxies’ usual alternative grit and grunge. Consider me mind blown.

FMLYBND is another endearing act that has quickly become a favorite emerging indie band in the past months. Their cover of Pixies classic Where Is My Mind has been resonating in my mind since its release late last year. Now, the Southern California band kicks off 2015 with another stellar release, Letting Go. It’s a muggy, slinky, but deliciously vibrant treat, and it kicks off FMLYBND’s exciting plan to release a new single for free every month of the year. I’m reminded of sultry Glass Animals meets Balearic Crystal Fighters on Letting Go, but much more popping and lively, like with the contagious warm energy of Little Daylight. While we’re here, we might as well thrill our ears again with FMLYBND’s effervescent cover of Where Is My Mind.

The Pixies’ Where Is My Mind is one of my all time favorite songs. Sure, there have been some magnificent covers of the song that I love, one of which was done by Placebo, but if you’re going to take on the timeless alt rock classic, you’d better do it well. When I saw that Southern California synthpop/alt pop act FMLYBND covered the tune, I clicked the play button with reservations. But I was immediately delightfully swept away by their effervescent, dreamy synthpop rendition. The bubbly production and swirly atmosphere reminds me of Mr. Little Jeans’ cover of Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs. Magical and intoxicating, FMLYBND has really hit the bullseye on this bewitching cover. They’re giving away the track for free to celebrate their December tour with The Wild Wild. If you missed FMLYBND’s muggy, pulsing original Young Wild a couple months ago, revisit with me below.

The Pixies sure are busy with new music lately, and I ain’t complaining, not one itty bitty bit. Though I’d caught them on tour recently (and was THAT a treat!), I tuned in to their live webcast from Coachella weekend one the other day and greatly enjoyed watching them rock out. Over the weekend, I also purchased the special Record Store Day vinyl version of their very first album in 23 years, Indie Cindy, which comes out April 28. The RSD version of the LP comes with a surprise seven inch bonus with this fantastic tune, Women Of War, a noisy, grungy ode to female soldiers. I love you, Pixies!

There are some heavy hitters to share today. Who else is mad excited that the Pixies have announced their first full length album in 23 years??? 23 years! The new album titled Indie Cindy will feature the tracks off recent surprises EP-1 and EP-2 as well as three brand new tunes. It’s out on April 28, but they’ll make a number of copies available on Record Store Day come April 19. I’m still reeling from catching the legendary band live at the Fox a few weeks back. In the meantime, watch their new video for Snakes, which features he band in paper mache heads. What’s going on with paper mache heads lately? Arcade Fire is in the midst of their Reflektor tour sporting their infamous heads, one of which was just stolen over the weekend. Sound the alert! Hey, maybe Black Francis took it as a prototype for this video.

A couple weeks back, I had the luck of catching the legendary Pixies live at the Fox Oakland, and boy oh boy, what a show it was. It’s super duper rad to catch the great band live. In fact, it was a rather surreal experience. They played a 32-33 song mega set that included tons of classics mixed with tunes off their recenpt EPs. So many classics off Surfer Rosa was played, which, by the way, I have on vinyl. Not to brag, but it’s an early promotional copy, too. Alright, I’m gloating, just a bit. This week, the Pixies released a video for their song Greens and Blues, one of their more demure, soft new tunes.
