‘Loving You’ is the lead track off Nick Nery’s debut EP ‘Phoenix’, which is available at Target. The NikoBeats’ track is two years old but still resonates. The neo-soul singer soars smoothly through the pains of unrequited love.

Phoenix’s new album Ti Amo drops in a week, and it’s going to be a whole lot of fun, judging from what we’ve heard off of it so far. The French veterans say that their new ful length is inspired by summer and Italian disco. Goodbye Soleil follows on prior reveals J-Boy and the album’s title track. It’s a sun drenched slice of dreamy electronica and synthpop. Phoenix is really indulging in the French house aspect of their music with their recent releases. Goodbye Soleil quickly reminds me of M83′s recent album Junk and Daft Punk’s lighter, airier fare. Ti Amo will be out June 9th via Glassnote Records.

Catchy doesn’t begin to describe Simian Ghost’s new single When You’re Ready. In fact, it’s like the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the Swedish four piece’s jubilant prancing, spring frolicking indie pop anthem. When You’re Ready is like a melding of Passion Pit’s spry youthfulness and Clean Cut Kid’s lively guitar pop, and it was produced by Phoenix’s Thomas Hedlund, which helps to explain some if its vivacity, too. The song is out now via iTunes, here.

I’m still stuck on vivacious J-Boy, the first single that Phoenix revealed off of their next album coming out on June 9th. We learned previously that the French band has prepared for us an album inspired by summer and Italian disco, and we’re more than ready for that sweet effusion of shimmery italowave and throwback disco pop. Today, they give us its title track, Ti Amo, revealed via a lyric video that resembles how old fashioned karaoke once looked. It’s a shimmy shaking affair that fits right into the theme of their new full length. Pre-order Ti Amo the album, here.

I can’t get enough of the new Phoenix since it dropped yesterday. It’s literally left me smiling for hours on end. The French rock heroes are more lustrously vibrant than ever on J-Boy, a new wavey, italo disco-y, hyper jubilant, feverish glinting spectacular. It sparkles and twinkles, shimmers and swirls, twirling us around within its whirlpool of dizzying euphoria. J-Boy brings to mind some of M83′s tunes off recent album Junk. As it turns out, the long time, much loved French house purveyors have described their forthcoming album Ti Amo as being related to “summer and Italian discos”, so the M83 Junk comparison isn’t too far off the mark. A summer of effulgent italowave and retro disco sounds more than splendid to me. Ti Amo arrives on June 9th.

Phoenix’s 1901 is unequivocally an indie classic, but it’s been ages since I’ve re-visited the still so splendidly good tune. A mysterious producer who goes by the name CAVX affords us a welcome return to the jaunty tune by delivering a massive flip of the tune. CAVX’s 1901 ripples languidly, its “falling” more like a slow float of rapture. This 1901 carries some Flume chill trap hues, but doused in ethereal effervescence.

OFFICIAL VID: Phoenix – Chloroform

November 13, 2013

Phoenix’s album Bankrupt! is filled with some great tunes, one of which is Chloroform, which is likely up there with Entertainment and Trying To Be Cool as my top 3 fave tracks off the release. Today sees the release of a music video for the track directed by Thomas Mars’ wife the famed Sofia Coppola. There sure are some perks to being married to Hollywood royalty. The slow motion video captures the expression of zealous super fans at a sepia toned Phoenix show. It’s almost… religious.

Sorry, kiddos, I’m not done with the covers for the day, yet! Another buzzing cover/remix and likely the most stunning one of the day is Sleigh Bells’ version of Phoenix’s Chloroform. There are covers and remixes. Then there are… re-imaginings. This is a re-imagining. Sleigh Bells have succeeded in creating something completely their own out of Bankrupt track Chloroform. Though the original track is indeed in there, as is a little remnant of Thomas Mars, the new, noisy arrangement with its progressive synths and Alexis Krauss’ arresting vocals is 100% Sleigh Bells. I love it. The Thomas Mars/Alexis Krauss “duet” section leaves me wondering how cool it would sound if Mars was a guest on a future Sleigh Bells song. Watch Phoenix perform the original track below. The clip is from their performance on Letterman back in May.
