Ugh, this song gets me every time. It’s such a hauntingly gut-wrenching ballad, and now that the new season of 13 Reasons Why has debuted on Netflix, a new version of The Night We Met has surfaced. Lord Huron’s song, which was originally from their album Strange Trails from 2015, gets a re-imagining that also features indie folk artist Phoebe Bridgers. Lord Huron is currently touring for their new album Vide Noir. The stacked soundtrack for season 2 of 13 Reasons Why is available, here.

Los Angeles indie folk artist Phoebe Bridgers is nothing short of beautifully haunting on reedy new ballad Funeral. As it name suggests, there’s an aching undertow to the gorgeous song, from which you cannot escape. The most breathtaking of harmonies, a stringy orchestral backdrop, and a hushed gentleness remind me of Simon and Garfunkel with the twangy drawl of First Aid Kit. Funeral is lifted from Phoebe Bridgers’ debut album Stranger In The Alps, out September 22nd on Dead Oceans. Pre-order, here. She’ll be heading out on tour this fall with Conor Oberst, The War On Drugs, and Noah Gundersen.

Smoke signals are usually sent up to snag someone’s attention. Well, you can say that Los Angeles’ Phoebe Bridgers’ Smoke Signals has captured me fully. I tumble down and lose myself in its wounded beauty and vivid poetics, which I find both intimate yet vast. I’m windswept haunted by billowing strings, a sparse yet spacious folk atmosphere, and Phoebe Bridgers’ exquisitely aching voice. It bewilders me how I never heard about this singer songwriter till now. She’s about to tour with Conor Oberst and she’s worked with Ryan Adams. Smoke Signals itself is produced by Tony Berg (Andrew Bird, Aimee Mann, Blake Mills) and Ethan Gruska, as well as mixed by Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, M. Ward, Jenny Lewis). A debut album is in the works, with more news of it to arrive soon. Those of you in Europe get to catch Phoebe Bridgers soon on that tour with Conor Oberst, details here
