I was so taken in by PASTEL GHOST a few years ago when she still resided in Oakland that I promptly wrote about her for an official blogger’s guide to SXSW the following year, so much was I deeply in love with her dark, ghostly electropop, which often reminded me of Crystal Castles. PASTEL GHOST is a guest on gothy synthpop purveyor Mr.Kitty’s new single Habits, and they both feature in the new music video for the song, too. Bag Raiders-like neon pulsing retrowave and Crystal Castles-like gossamer vocals abound on the Austin artist’s gem. The track is lifted from Mr.Kitty’s recent album A.I., available via Bandcamp, here.

I count myself fortunate for having caught PASTEL GHOST live in Oakland just over a year ago before she moved across the country to Brooklyn, though I’m much gutted that I wasn’t able to catch her at SXSW earlier this year despite writing about her for the official SXSW Blogger’s Guide. PASTEL GHOST’s gossamer electropop is exactly the kind of dark, gothy music that’s right up my witch house and ravey darkwave loving alley. The project created by “dream rave queen” Vivenne Moon graces us with more of her pulsing synths and foggy dreamscape as she remixes Miami based electropop artist VIRGO’s Disappear, giving VIRGO’s song a moody ghostliness much surreal and intoxicating. VIRGO herself describes the edit as reminding her of scenes from Hayao Miyazaki’s film Castle In The Sky. It’s certainly a gloriously haunting remix, one perfect for those who also love Crystal Castles and TR/ST, like me. Download PASTEL GHOST’s remix of VIRGO’s Disappear, here.

Today, someone introduced me to music from one Pastel Ghost. The artist just dropped her debut album, ABYSS. When I listened to ABYSS, I found myself so excited that I shared Pastel Ghost’s music immediately with my good friend. Why? Well, first of all, Pastel Ghost crafts darkwavey, gothy electronic music. Second of all, her gossamer soundscapes and detached, ghostly vocals remind me of (now controversial) Crystal Castles, who both my friend and I are much devoted to, perhaps even without Alice Glass in tow, but the jury’s still out on that. Thirdly, Pastel Ghost is from our beloved town on the bay, Oakland. Stream album track Clouds tonight to get an idea of her droopy, murky, and droning music. But make sure you check out her debut album ABYSS in full, here. While CLOUDS might be the most foggily warm track, there’s plenty of cold, disjointed eerieness to go around in the rest of the album. Count me in for when Pastel Ghost plays a local gig.
