End Of July is more than about the end of summer. It’s about the end of love, the beginning of heartache, and the pining for what’s been and gone. This melancholy is encapsulated in the most beautiful manner on Canadian band Paper Lions’ new alt pop single. This slow simmering number blooms brilliantly into a florid intoxicating aria, even closing with heartfelt horns through which seep a touch of optimism and plenty of romance. End Of July displays Paper Lions’ soft under belly, an unexpected surprise after they previously gave us exuberant songs bordering on indie dance. End Of July, which was mixed in Brooklyn by Andrew Maury (RAC, Lewis Del Mar, Panama Wedding), is taken from Paper Lions’ forthcoming album, Full Colour, out soon on September 16th.

The song title My Number invariably drew me to think of Foals when I first encountered Paper Lions’ latest tunes, especially after having just seen the band crush it at Outside Lands Music Festival over the weekend. But Paper Lions’ My Number takes us in by far a different direction than that jarring song. The Canadian quartet, who takes influence from indie rock legends like Tokyo Police Club, give us a glowing eruption of synthpop and rock that ventures into indie dance territory. My Number was mixed in Brooklyn with Andrew Maury (RAC, Lewis Del Mar, Panama Wedding), and it’s a prismatic driving anthem that gloriously bursts wide open with a soaring chorus. My Number is a free download here. A remix EP may be on the way, plus a full length album named Full Colour.

Paper Lions hook me in tightly with their luminously jaunty new single Believer, the Canadian band’s first since signing with Australian label Elevnth Records. Believer is taken from Paper Lions’ forthcoming sophomore album, currently in production. The dance ready indie pop song was recorded in Brooklyn with Andrew Maury (RAC, Panama Wedding), and his uptempo snappiness is hard to miss on the rambunctiously synthy tune. Rays of sunshine seem to fill my room as I bounce around to the song, despite today’s stormy weather. Paper Lions’ falsettos remind me of Everything Everything and Great Good Fine OK, but fused with the melodic alt rock of Young The Giant. Paper Lions easily made me a “believer” with the new track. Believe is available now on iTunes.

Canadian indie rock and pop band Paper Lions are preparing to embark on an Australian tour come December, and to mark the occasion, they’ve released a music video for their bright single My Friend. The infectious, simmering tune is off their 2013 sophomore album My Friends. It’s also available for download on iTunes.
