Los Angeles duo OYLS was one of the exciting new bands to arise in 2016. They captivated us with their innovative fusion of synthpop and indie rock on their two stellar singles, 10th Song and Maps, both instantly infectious and well deserving of the buzz that followed. OYLS now gives us their thoroughly unique and unconventional take on Christmas standard Jingle Bells, their final release of the year while they are hard at work finishing their first EP. They hope we find it as weird as they do. This Jingle Bells may be the quirkiest yet, a wonky fluttering, woozy babbling delight. Its intoxicates and surprises, pulls and twists. Jazzy soul, psychedelia, and indietronica discombobulate among each other for some holiday razzle dazzle.

Though 10th Song is by far not Los Angeles duo OYLS’ tenth song to date, the level of complexity and effortless delivery on the rich pumping blend of indie rock and synthpop might mislead us to think otherwise. 10th Song is comforting and soothing, yet upbeat and vivacious. While OYLS’ prior songs reminded me at times of Joywave and Hot Chip, this one definitely has some Phoenix and Atlas Genius like vibes going on in its plucky guitar and resplendent synths. Revisit their magnificent song Maps below, if you happened to miss my eager share previously.

It’s a very synthypop sort of Sunday so far as we dive into some new OYLS. The Los Angeles based duo are spectacular on catchy new tune Maps, a sleekly buoyant song that blends chamber pop with dance pop. I can’t help but be reminded of Hot Chip and Joywave by its combination of velvety and springy qualities. Maps also has plenty of quirky moments that fascinate and inebriate, a much innovative and mesmerizing jam with a comforting and inspiring message. It’s a must for your feel good playlist on those down on your luck days.

OYLS is a new synthpop duo based in Los Angeles, but even more cool is the fact that one half of OYLS once went to UC Berkeley. Go Bears! Guess who else went to Cal? Giraffage! But I digress. This fresh new act came together to make catchy, funky electronic music, a bit reminiscent of Chromeo or Capital Cities. Undone is one of their few offerings, an undeniably sultry and addictive dance jam.
