When Outkast gave us Ms. Jackson, they gave us one of the most infectious songs of all time, and a very fun and playful one at that. Some earworms are not welcome. You can’t get rid of their melody from your head, and you find it annoying. I’ve never felt that way about Ms. Jackson, which will surely pass the test of all time. It makes sense then that Ms. Jackson has been the subject of much remixing and covering over the years, many of them incredibly fresh and innovative (don’t forget ZHU launched his career with an anonymous Outkast mashup/cover not too long ago). That brings us to this track, a banger through and through. New Los Angeles duo Party Pupils bursts on to the scene with an epic version of Ms. Jackson, a hyper active cover re-work that takes the original’s funky hip hop and turns it into a Jersey club bouncing, future funk slicing, and electro house surging sonic oasis. This frisky sleek Ms. Jackson is easily one of my favorite approaches on the track, and we’ve had plenty over the years. Party Pupil’s Ms. Jackson is a free download, here.

Can you guess who offered up a cover of Outkast standard Hey Ya! today? I bet you can’t guess. Okay, if you give up, I’ll tell you. Florida based alt rock band Surfer Blood! It’s quite the surprise, but turns out, Surfer Blood’s laid back, gritty surfer rock sound alters Hey Ya! in a very fresh and delightful way. It’s a much smoother and chill Hey Ya!, one that’s perfect for a lazy afternoon kicking it with your buddies in the woods or on a NorCal beach. Surfer Blood recorded the cover for Amazon Acoustics, a compilation that will be on Amazon Music that features exclusive covers and songs from thirty acts.

Roses is one of my favorite songs from OutKast, if not my absolute favorite. Which is actually kind of odd, because back in the days of OutKast ruling the world, when young ‘uns KNEW who OutKast is, I used to be much more fond of their other tunes. Somehow, Roses crept up to be a timeless favorite. The moment I hear that chorus kick in, it’s like I a jolt of electricity pulsing through my veins. Florida production act PLS&TY douses the classic in blaring, electrifying future bass on a remix that takes Roses to a whole new level of invigorating thrills. Excuse me as I get up from my desk and dance like a fool around my office.

Production duo Peter Brennan & TCUP team back up on an electrifying re-imagining of Outkast hit Roses, a song that made a huge impression on me over the years and brings back much memories. The duo give Roses a huge bounce and plenty of exhilarating progressive house vibes on their remix. As a result of this remix, I’m going to have “roses smell like boo boo-ooo” stuck in my head forever ever (pun intended) again, but this time, with massive bass and radiant synths.

Some people might be tired of all the producer and band names that swap first letters of famous people’s names, but you must admit, San Holo is a pretty cool one. The producer, from the Netherlands, impressed me fully with new EP Cosmos, which dropped yesterday on Heroic Recordings. San Holo crafts chill, ambient, textured future bass and trap music, the kind that I love extolling on IHM. One of the best tracks off the Cosmos EP is Hiding, which features vocals by The Nicholas. It’s a gorgeous, swirling tune, sure to take you to a blissful state of euphoria. San Holo also has some suberb remixes under his belt, including a recent wicked remix of Outkast’s Ms. Jackson, which you can stream below.

Back to San Francisco we go with this new remix by electronic/hip hop producer Flaxo! Apparently he “got a little tired of making all these dark and melancholy tracks” so he decided to make a “funky summer jam” for us. Hey, Flaxo! I love your dark and melancholic stuff. But you know what? This remix of Outkast’s Ms. Jackson is pretty dope, too! The newly added instrumentals put the track in a whole new, glowing light. And as I mentioned recently, it’s really cool that all these talented producers have been giving us sweet new renditions of some old jams.

Moves Like Ms Jackson

March 24, 2014

Making waves and creating buzz on the internet the past several weeks is this mysterious mashup/flip titled Moves Like Ms. Jackson, by an enigmatic Los Angeles producer named ZHU (who released it anonymously, but sleuths have since figured it out). Moves Like Ms. Jackson is an awesome medley that throws together so many of Outkast’s sweet hit songs, including So Fresh So Clean, The Way You Move, Ms. Jackson, and The Whole World. For all the kids wondering who the hell Outkast is after their headlining slot at Coachella was announced… listen up, study up! Then go jam to the originals.

Big Boi feat. Phantogram & Sade CPU 2.0 (Dungeoneze Rmx)

January 28, 2014

Today’s an epic day of collaborations between hip hop artists and indie acts. Despite all the crazy Outkast reunion hoopla going on, Big Boi has stayed dedicated on his solo work. He’ll be dropping some special remixes for songs off his last album, Vicious Lies & Dangerous Rumors, over the next few weeks. This week’s remix is a slick, chic version of CPU titled CPU 2.0 that features Phantogram and Sade’s Nothing Can Come Between Us by Atlanta producer Dungeoneze. The luscious song is paired with some hypnotizing computer visuals below.
