It feels like a lifetime ago when San Fermin first captured the whole of my being with Sonsick, a song that reminded me of Dirty Projectors and thoroughly entranced me with its baroque intricacy. It has, after all, been more than three long years. My love affair with the Brooklyn collective continues as they reveal brand new single Open, a song just as magically bewitching if not even more so with its gauzy ethereal, chiffon stringy beauty. Though I miss Allen Tate’s baritone voice on Open, Charlene Kaye’s pure and flawless voice more than enthralls, and I’m sure we’ll hear plenty of Allen on further previews off forthcoming album Belong. Open breathes and flutters like a weightless bird. The single will be available for purchase on January 6th, while new album Belong is expected to arrive later this year.

SKULS is another skilled San Francisco production act that I’ve previously featured on IHM. The Bay seems to be boasting some fantastic future bass talent, and considering my fondness of the genre, I’m not one to complain. Since I last mentioned SKULS, the group has dropped a new EP that shows off a much harder and heavier sound. The EP, Corrupt Files, opens with the grandiose and aptly named Open. It grows in thunderous bass from the very opening bars, until it hits an energy level and resounding strength that reminds me of Hudson Mohawke. Another track off the stellar EP is Returned, a darkly menacing but oh so satisfying trap jam. Check out the full 3 track EP, here. I can’t help but be elated that my neck of the woods houses such massive future bass and trap production.

It’s not often that there’s wind of a remix done by Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, but he’s offered up this resplendent version of UK trio The Staves’ song Open. In fact, he’s also recording the band’s sophomore album. This remix is easily recognized as a Vernon work of art, with its healthy dose of vocoder use, Vernon’s own vocals, and its folktronica styled layer upon layer of reverberating, haunting elements. His remix is an intoxicating experience, and I have the slightest feeling that Kanye might like this one, a lot.

Vancouver’s Cyril Hahn always hits it on the nail with his beautiful, euphoric dance tunes. I’m still such a devoted fan of earlier track Perfect Form, featuring Shy Girls, but he’s given us plenty more to love since then. Cyril’s latest is Open, a slick, uplifting, airy track featuring velveteen vocals by Ryan Ashley. The sublime Open, like prior single Slow, featuring Rochelle Jordan, will be on Cyril Hahn’s Voices EP, out soon on PMR Records. Revisit that sultry number below. Cyril Hahn just played a pool party in San Francisco over the weekend. I heard it was off the hook.

Bringing the tempo down with this remix by Vienna producer SOHN. It’s not new, but it’s too good not to share now that I’ve stumbled upon it again. It’s a blissed out, atmospheric reworking of Rhye’s Open, which already has a ton of amazing remixes (most notably the Ryan Hemsworth one). SOHN’s remix is breathtaking, building on the sensuality of the song and creating a more organic fluidity despite the more electronic approach.

By now, Canadian electronic and hip hop producer Ryan Hemsworth has made a recognizable name for himself in the buzz machine. I’ve shared some amazing remixes by the guy, including one of my faves, a really neat one of Rhye’s Open. I’ve also shared some of his atmospheric, original work. Stream his latest new track above, which debuted on MixMag. Perfectly is a bright, shimmering tune, not half as heavy or shadowy as some of his other work. It’s a beaut. Check out the Open remix again below. I just played it the other night for my friends at our BBQ during one of my hours long OCD/ADD music playing sessions, with my phone connected to my friend’s fantastic sound system, all the while running back and forth between Youtube on my phone and good food & drinks. I think they liked the track.

And if you missed Colour & Movement back in early January, check the sick, textured tune out:

Open (Ryan Hemsworth Remix)

February 21, 2013

Holy bugging cow. I’m already a huge fan of new Los Angeles duo Rhye’s silky smooth Sade-like track Open, but this sweet remix by rising Canadian producer Ryan Hemsworth just gives it a whole new feel! The remix is crisp and cool, like a tall, refreshing glass of ice cold water. The next time the weather’s sweltering hot, I’m making myself an iced tea and putting this remix on! I’m serious! The original sexy, hot track and the remix are both amazingly good, yet, they head off in totally opposite directions. I think that’s pretty neat, how about you? One is hot, the other is cool. Wow. Awesome.

In case you forgot how the original sounded, here ya go:
