LYRIC VID: Of Monsters and Men – Hunger

May 27, 2015

Iceland’s Of Monsters and Men have revealed another moving gem off their coming album, Beneath The Skin, via a simple yet captivating lyric video. Hunger is full of bittersweet emotion. It’s the most heart rending and pastoral track we’ve heard so far from the new album, reminding more of the band’s folksier offerings from their prior album. Driving, thumping drums give the song an extra ounce of grandiosity of the kind we’ve come to expect from OMaM. They’ve always been so adept at balancing pastoral beauty with magnificence, giving us music both dripping in stirring sentiment and soaring with expansive beauty. Beneath The Skin is slated for release on June 9th, which isn’t all that far away. We don’t have too much longer to wait!

Iceland folk darlings Of Monsters and Men recently revealed some material off their highly anticipated new album, and as expected, they’ve brought their harmonious, lush charm to the max. However, as heard on lead single Crystals and recently revealed track I Of The Storm, the act seems to have taken on a sound ever more powerful and expansive than before. Let’s revisit Crystals via the new music video they just unleashed today, in all its grandiose magnificence and cathartic flourishes. Even the video seems to be more cinematic, more theatrical. New album Beneath The Skin will be out June 9th via Republic Records, and I can’t wait to hear how the rest of the album sounds.

LYRIC VID: Of Monsters and Men – I Of The Storm

April 29, 2015

It’s been a few years now since the world went ga ga for Iceland’s Of Monsters and Men, and we’re all waiting impatiently for their next album. Beneath The Skin will drop on June 9th (which is apparently a big release date, considering some of the other albums dropping that day, ie. Muse). Today, OMaM revealed a lyric video for a brand new track off the record. I Of The Storm, though carrying some marching percussion, seems to strengthen my conviction that their new album is far less rustic folksy, far more full bodied alt and synth. Despite that, I Of The Storm is an intimate, poignant, and breathtaking ballad. The lyric video itself is an interesting lip sync visual piece that goes along with some of the issues buzzing in the societal sphere right now.

I swear I have some special powers of prediction sometimes. Quite often, soon after I wonder about the current status of a certain band or artist, something new or an announcement comes along. You can ask my friends, I specifically wondered out loud the other day about what Icelandic folk darlings Of Monsters and Men were up to, and bam, here they are with a new sophomore album on the way and a new tune named Crystals. Beneath The SKin will be out June 9 via Republic Records. The first taste off it is everything we love about OMaM.. folksy, endearing charm and cinematic splendor, though Crystals is even grander and more magnificent than anything we’ve heard from them yet. Welcome back!

Yeah Yeah Yeahs cover by Of Monsters and Men

March 19, 2013

Oh, yes, please! This is awesome. Iceland folksters Of Monsters and Men lent their beloved, gorgeous sound to Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Skeletons. I expected greatness. I hit play. I was satisfied. They’ve performed this cover at shows live and also for Australia’s Triple J radio, but now we get the HQ recording! They’ve certainly made the song all their own and so signature OMaM sounding.

In case you don’t remember how Skeletons sounds, here it is in all its glory again. Man. What the hell. Both versions are so good. I missed Skeletons! And I miss Karen O and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs! Can’t wait for Mosquito!

It feels like it’s been ages since Of Monsters and Men charmed the socks off us and made us fall in love with them with their fantastic debut album My Head Is An Animal. It was without a doubt one of the top endearing albums of 2012. I also had the luck to catch them a number of times live, and they’re well worth it, trust me. In the meantime, they’ve finally released a fantasy infused magical video for their enchanting song King And Lionheart. It’s a cool video and considering how much people love the whole fantasy shtick lately, it’s a sure hit. And really, OMaM can do no wrong. Gotta love it all.

Pardon me, as I take a little hiatus and rush to get ready for day one of Outside Lands 2012. It’s been hectic prepping and getting things done beforehand, but it’s going to be another epic 3 day festival weekend in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park!!! You can listen to full sets LIVE online here: http://tunein.com/radio/Outside-Lands-Radio-s176462/  It’ll be a marathon weekend for me. I started off with my own pre-show on Wednesday catching Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, which was incredible, and last night was a sold out Night Show at the Cal Academy where Of Monsters and Men killed it. Here goes the actual fest itself… Wish me luck!

ZOMG. Of Monsters and Men is already OMG. Bombay Bicycle Club is more OMG. Put them together? ZOMG! Seriously! Little Talks, too! BBC totally reworked Of Monsters and Men’s awesome song Little Talks, and this is the end result, a little of OMaM, a little BBC, a LOT of delicious wonderful indie pop goodness! The folk flavor on the remix is minimized, the emo-ness is maximized.
