My spirits shot sky high the very moment that I noticed new Royal Tongues has arrived. The Los Angeles based indie pop duo have delighted me endlessly in the past with their brightly glowing, deeply contagious music. Oblivion is no different, an animated and spirited first single from an EP to come this summer. The song shimmers grandly, engulfing me with Passion Pit meets The Wombats synth melodic warmth. If Oblivion is any indication of the EP to come, we’re going to have a fantastic Royal Tongues sort of summer.

Some of my favorite Bastille songs have been the most heartwrenching and melting tunes. I mean, come on now, Bastille Dan’s voice? Swoon! One of their most melancholic gems has go to be the mellifluous, forlorn Oblivion. French producer Slinger chose exactly this tune to remix, infusing it with an extra dose of electrifying atmosphere and taking it more into bittersweet emotion levels. He also gives it a gentle drum and bass roll that works wonders with the tune.

OFFICIAL VID: Bastille – Oblivion

It’s crazy how huge Bastille has gotten in the past year or so worldwide, but it comes as no surprise, considering how much they enthralled us here on IHM from when no one on this side of the pond knew them yet. Indeed, so many girls are ga ga over Bastille Dan’s good looks and beautiful voice. I’m so happy I was lucky enough to catch them at Popscene at the Rickshaw Stop early on, before they started selling out all the big venues soon after. This week, Bastille released a beautifully filmed video, starring Game of Throne’s Sophie Turner, for their tender, sentimental single Oblivion. It’s a great reason to revisit one of the saccharine and most stringy tunes off All This Bad Blood.

New York based dream folk act Wilsen first impressed me last year with an amazing rendition of Grimes’ Oblivion. The cover was pretty mind blowing, switching up the entire vibe of Boucher’s experimental electronic pop tune. Other than amazing covers, Wilsen proves themselves quite talented with alluring originals, like this brand new one Magnolia, the title track off a new four track EP to be released May 18. Revisit the jaw dropping, magical Oblivion cover again below.

New York based dream folk act Wilsen impressed many ears earlier this year with their incredible cover of Grimes’ Oblivion. They’ve done it again with their new Portishead cover. Wilsen’s version of The Rip is soothing and unimaginably dreamy. It reminds me of Goldfrapp, particularly Goldfrapp’s recent album Tales Of Us, but less snazzy and more earthy. If you missed their unique, twangy Oblivion cover earlier this year, listen below.

Franz Ferdinand covered….. GRIMES???

August 28, 2013

That’s right. Franz Ferdinand covered Grimes’ Oblivion for live radio. Franz Ferdinand. Grimes. What? It works! Alex Kapranos’ vocals and the guitar approach is actually pretty dang delightful and pleasant! Check it out!
