We’re new to That Gum You Like, and I can’t help but wonder if their name is an ode to David Lynch and Twin Peaks. It would make sense, considering the dark ethereal beauty of the husband wife duo’s latest single, Biography. They do after all, sound a bit like Chromatics and Au Revoir Simone, both of which are obviously favorites of Lynch. Hints of CHVRCHES’ animated synthpop and Purity Ring’s haunting electropop also cast a spell on us through the track, which the duo have tagged quite fittingly as “nugaze”. That Gum You Like, who hails from Brazil, are a band we can’t help but love. Biography is a free download, here.

It’s time for some local love as we delve deeply into the intoxicating nu-gaze and dream pop of one Oakland based band named Garlands, founded by Lisa Light (The Lovemakers, El Elle) and Mikael Johnston (Mephisto Odyssey, Dresden & Johnston). Their murky shimmering song The Ratio features evocative female vocals, analog synths, and washed out guitar lines, evoking I Break Horses, Cocteau Twins, Slowdive, and Mazzy Star in the process. The track comes from their self titled debut full length, which drops October 25th. Garlands will be playing a record release party at one of my favorite San Francisco venues, Rickshaw Stop.

My heart can’t resist the sort of lo-fi jangling, dreamy glistening dream pop that this project out of Georgia, Shampoo, serves up in abundance. Hanging Up On U is pure intoxication, a languid swirling waltz through the air. Hanging Up On U bops gently, whispers enticingly, and shimmers softly, channeling hints of post punk and shoegaze in its pastel folds of luxuriance.

This is one “shampoo” I want to be lathered with endlessly.

The Atlanta base band will be releasing their debut full length album Terrible Heat on August 19th via Bear Kids Recordings.

This should come as welcome news for the plentiful Wye Oak fans out there, including myself. They’re back! That’s right, the nu-gazey folk rock duo have returned. I still remember my first Wye Oak experience, back in my YouTube wandering days prior to the inception of IHM. I stumbled upon a live acoustic performance of Civilian on a balcony in Amsterdam, and it took my breath away. The video is still up on YouTube, and it’s still incredibly magical.  Today, Jenn and Andy present us with a sweeping new gift named Watching The Waiting, one with such aerial bright beauty. Watching The Waiting was revealed via its video above. The duo have also announced their fifth studio album. Tween will release on August 5th via Merge Records. I’m more than ready to embrace a brand new full length from Wye Oak.

Both frigidly haunting and warmly dreamy comes Lonely Ghost, a swirling, chillwavey, nu-gazey synthpop jam from solo Canadian artist and multi-instrumentalist Artisan Loyalist. The hazy song is the title track off the artist’s debut album, and it immediately pulls me into a deep and foggy reverie. Its languid aspect brings to mind some of Washed Out’s music, but the spacious synthwork also reminds me of Neon Indian, but far less urgent. Artisan Loyalist’s Lonely Ghost album is out this week on Sky Council Recordings.

We Are The Dreamers is the title track off fittingly named The Stargazer Lilies’ debut album from 2013, which is about to see a re-release on picture vinyl as the band gears up for their follow up release later this year. They’ve also just announced a tour with Tobacco. The song itself is a dream pop shoegaze number with plenty of spacey psychedelic fuzz and dark, haunting atmosphere. It’s far too easy to get lost in the draggy, droopy qualities of the duo’s gorgeous but spine tingling gem.

Blonde Redhead – Dripping

July 9, 2014

There are tons of great returns from veterans lately, and not to be overlooked is the return of New York alt rockers Blonde Redhead. On September 2, they’ll be releasing their ninth album Barragán, on Kobalt. They’ve unveiled a new one this week off the release. Dripping is a hazey, psych and nu-gaze tinged, pensive listen that literally feels like it’s dripping and oozing its way through the course of its 3 minute 40 seconds. It follows on the heels of first single No More Honey.

OFFICIAL VID: The 1975 – Robbers

April 29, 2014

Ahhh, The 1975, how you never fail to make me swoon. The Manchester band’s self titled debut album sure melted me often last year, and catching them live at Popscene in a small venue was a real treat indeed. Now, they’re selling out much larger venues and have a huge following. Their new video for album track Robbers has only been out a day, and it’s already surpassed 200K views. Would you expect anything less, considering their sappy nu gazey alt rock music and how dang good looking the band is, particularly lead Matt Healy and his dreamy locks and eyes? Indulge in that dreaminess with this great video which reminds me of the film True Romance. It captures the essence of The 1975 very well.
