Buzzy Lee is certainly attracting a lot of buzz these days, particularly after the Los Angeles based singer songwriter, who’s also the daughter of renowned film ogul Steven Spielberg, released her last single Coolhand. She reunites with acclaimed producer Nicolas Jaar on her latest single, too, adding fuel to that buzz. No Her, a cimmerian indie pop aria, marches slowly and deliberately, a bewitching and other worldly beauty with murky, dusky production and aching, burning guitars. The entrancing songbird explains: “‘No Her’ is about that piece of myself that I’m worried my partner will discover isn’t really there. That there is an ideal ‘her’; someone’s idea of me is different from who I am, and yet, I’m worried the other ‘her’ is the one who has drawn them in… But to be fully honest it’s about not believing someone loved me.” Re-visit our Coolhand feature, here. No Her is lifted from Buzzy Lee’s forthcoming EP Facepaint, out April 27. Pre-order, here

With a musical moniker like Buzzy Lee, it’s almost as if Sasha Spielberg already knew she’d pick up a whole lot of buzz with her music. The Los Angeles based singer songwriter is the daughter of renowned film mogul Steven Spielberg, but she’s making her own way with glossy and coltish pop on whimsical Coolhand, which was produced by esteemed artist Nicolas Jaar. Coolhand’s sass and playfulness evokes a mix of Feist and JAIN, but enveloped in a fluid and murky, dreamy and surreal soundscape. It’s quite the dynamic and kinetic arrangement, and it explores our notions of self-worth as entailed by our addiction to social media. Coolhand is the lead single from Buzzy Lee’s forthcoming EP, Facepaint, due out April 27th on Future Classic. Pre-order, here.

Jumping on early for a must share. Ever brilliant Nicolas Jaar has dropped an amazing, unexpected remix of Florence + the Machine’s hot new single What Kind Of Man. That’s not the only thing he dropped. My jaw’s been dropped, too. Banging disco and jungle grooves take What Kind Of Man to mind blowing sexy euphoric boogie down levels. There are tingles going up and down my spine. Oh what a great day it is!

Off a compilation collection titled WORK from the label Other People comes this song, A Pixel, by New York based, German producer Visuals. The whimsical, minimalist electronic pop treat is wonderfully catchy and woozy. Guess who’s involved in the creation of this tune? DARKSIDE! That’s right, that genius of a man named Nicolas Jaar produced the song, and his Darkside partner, David Harrington, turned in some guitar duty on the tune. WORK will be out on September 28.

Long, long ago, in the early days of IHM, we established that Nicolas Jaar is a brilliant musician. Whether it was his amazingly textured solo works of art, or his work with Dave Harrington in Darkside, he was always creating walls of moving, profound sound. Jaar has a new project these days. He recently teamed up with Sasha Spielberg under the name Just Friends. I can’t help thinking of Samantha Urbani teaming up with the talented Blood Orange in comparison. It doesn’t help that Samantha Urbani is from the band Friends, too. My mind’s going in loops! But I don’t think I’m really reaching that far here. Just listen to their new soulful single Don’t Tell Me. Like Blood Orange, Nicolas Jaar lays down some really sick, ornate production. Like Samantha Urbani, Sasha Spielberg lends her R&B inflected, soulful vocals. Combined, we get a propulsive, well crafted, grooving song that boasts some finely tuned balance.

Shlohmo x Nicolas Jaar x Sasha Spielberg

September 11, 2013

Oh, boy. What do you get when you cross the genius of Shlohmo with the talent and sheer brilliance of Nicolas Jaar and Sasha Spielberg? Listen below. Shlohmo remixed Avalanche Just Friends (Nicolas Jaar + Sasha Spielberg). The end result is an insanely atmospheric, shadowy, post-dubsteppy, choppy screwy, warped, mind melting composition with clicketty clacketty Burial and Four Tet like moments. I’ll definitely be revisiting this one late at night.
