Illustrious musician Annie Clark, better known to the world as brilliant artist St. Vincent, put out one of my favorite art pop albums of 2017 in critically acclaimed Masseduction. While the record seemed to diverge from some of her gnarled guitar tracks of yore, it was a genius concept with incredible songs. Album single New York is undoubtedly a crowd favorite, a sing-along ready, melancholia steeped beauty. We love it too. And we can’t help but love this remix of the song by Los Angeles duo DJDS. I can’t imagine it’s an easy song to remix, but they’ve expertly crafted a drum & bass plus breakbeats inflected version of New York that gives the original some extra urgency and a darker aura. The official DJDJS version of New York is available at iTunes, here.

Man, I’ve seen Foster The People at my first Coachella, Big Gigantic last year, but I need me some The Knocks at Coachella soon. Anyways, New York’s finest production duo released a remix package of their of fire track Ride or Die and Big Gigantic didn’t fail in bringing the heat. I can’t even finish writing about this inferno since the heat has my fingertips rising off the keyboard in an attempt to fan the flames.

Guys, guys! That rumored new St. Vincent just dropped! The visionary art rock/chamber pop musician and guitar virtuoso is back! And

Annie Clark’s gone beautifully and lavishly orchestral on New York. Yes, this is more classic strings and elegant piano chords Annie, and I do still miss the angular guitar Annie, but boy is this a majestic moving tune. You can find New York on iTunes, here. Also, St. Vincent is going on tour! Find out more, here. Tickets go on sale tomorrow. The tour is named Fear The Future. Could this be the title of her next album? Hopefully, a San Francisco date will be added to the tour in the coming weeks.

I know this one’s been making the rounds for a large part of the month already, garnering support all across the board, but we’re still super excited to drop on some Amelia Airhorn, in case you haven’t caught wind of this buzzing new project from New York just yet. So, who exactly is Amelia Airhorn? A new production auteur? A surprise starlet here to shake things up? Not quite. Amelia Airhorn is in fact a mega collaboration between The Knocks and Skylar Spence, and they’ve already released a buzz worthy mixtape, or album, named ‘The Knocks & Skylar Spence Present… Amelia Airhorn’. The trio of talented musicians take us right to the heart of New York on a hot steamy night with this disco spectacular, which you can stream in full, here. NY is Red Hot is one of the highlights of the album, a 70′s roller rink ready, neon twirling, churning bop of a classic banger. You can download Amelia Airhorn’s album in full, here, and trust me, you’re going to want to take this one for many a spin this summer.

In case you haven’t heard, Peter Silberman of The Antlers, a band I love dearly, is fast at work preparing a debut solo album for us, Impermanence, due to arrive February 24th on Transgressive. In the meantime, he’s unleashed a music video constructed out of vintage historical footage for album single New York. New York itself is an understated beauty, a tranquil lullaby etched with delicate melancholy. Silberman’s forthcoming album is a musical document of his experience with a hearing impairment that led him to leave Brooklyn for a secluded setting in upstate New York. It feels as if we’re taking that journey alongside him as he serenades us with his sparse, minimalist song. You can pre-order Impermanence digitally from iTunes or  physically, here.

Immersive soundscape by Me Not You on their debut track ‘Bulletproof’. The New York duo generates an off-kilter atmosphere of uncertainty that swirls into a direction of hope for new beginnings. This duo I liken to Phantogram and Purity Ring.

London’s Douglas Dare caught our attention a few months ago with his haunting music, and he continues to spellbind us with his moody seething, darkly entrancing sound on New York. This dusky glum experimental piece melds chamber pop and art rock in a thoroughly fascinating manner, luring us in with deep, Fyfe like silken vocals and a Radiohead meets Son Lux like surreal soundscape. The shadowy lurking music video that comes with the single, which can be viewed below, is also riveting if not foreboding. New York is lifted from Douglas Dare’s forthcoming sophomore album, Aforger, out Friday, October 14th. In the meantime, Douglas Dare has been touring Europe in support of Wild Beasts. Pre-order his new album, here.

It’s been a wild ride of many years with The Knocks on IHM, from the early days when I first noticed them featured on a very old Icona Pop tune, to when they had me dancing in glee to Brightside, still a favorite The Knocks song of mine. It’s great to see the duo slaying room fulls of enraptured crowds with their funk inflected disco dance music, but I must say their latest is an unexpected delight. B-Roc and JPatt dish out an ode to the Big Apple on New York City, a hip hop meets slick disco tribute featuring Harlem rapper Cam’ron. This is a song ready for a playlist filled with Graduation era Kanye and Empire State Of Mind Alicia Keys, not something I would’ve thought of previously when listening to The Knocks. New York City is off The Knocks’ highly anticipated debut album 55, and it’s a strong statement of how diverse and exciting that album’s going to be. 55 will be out next year on Neon Gold / Big Beat, and the boys are going on tour January and February with a stop in San Francisco on February 12th at the Indy. The last time I caught The Knocks at the Indy earlier this year, we had a big ol’ mid week dance party that would’ve beaten any weekend night festivities easily. New York City is available now on iTunes.

OFFICIAL VID: Elbow – New York Morning

January 29, 2014

Moving into more sentimental territory with one of today’s best new music videos. The visual for Manchester alt rock band Elbow’s New York Morning is a profound, moving mini documentary about a couple that grew up in old New York. Get ready for some subtitle reading, but it’s well worth it. The song itself is a beautiful piece off Elbow’s coming sixth studio album The Take Off and Landing Of Everything out March 10.
