Wildling is an unsigned five piece from Los Angeles that previously escaped my attention, but as they prepare to embark on their first tour this week in support of Hey Marseilles, they’ve stolen my heart with a cover of Neil Young’s Heart Of Gold. The indie rock rendition of the timeless classic is a moody electrifier, a pensively dynamic gem shrouded in weary misery. The stunning cover is a free download now, here, and view their tour dates, here. It looks like Wildling will be hitting up Brick+Mortar in San Francisco next week with Hey Marseilles, a gig I might have to try and make my way out to.

Wilco covered Get Lucky (AND A LOT MORE)

June 24, 2013

Chicago rock veterans Wilco played a set at Solid Sound Festival in Massachusetts, and they decided to do some thing kind of crazy cool. They played a covers set filled with 27 classic and new tunes. There’s a full set up on NYCTaper but their service seems to be temporarily down, so in the meantime, let’s just tune into this fan video of PART of the set. Which part? Wilco’s cool spot on cover of the ubiquitous Get Lucky. This looks like it was LOADS of fun.

Here’s a list of all the covers they went through during this gig. Amazing. I want to hear it all:

The Boys Are Back in Town (Thin Lizzy cover)
Cut Your Hair (Pavement cover)
In the Street (Big Star cover)
New Madrid (Uncle Tupelo cover)
Dead Flowers (The Rolling Stones cover)
Simple Twist of Fate (Bob Dylan cover)
Ripple (Grateful Dead cover)
Who Loves the Sun (The Velvet Underground cover)
And Your Bird Can Sing (The Beatles cover)
And Your Bird Can Sing (The Beatles cover) (And Your Bird Can Sing was … more)
Psychotic Reaction (Count Five cover)
Tom Courtenay (Yo La Tengo cover) (with Yo La Tengo)
James Alley Blues
Waterloo Sunset (The Kinks cover) (with Lucius)
Waterloo (ABBA cover) (with Lucius)
(What’s So Funny ’bout) Peace, Love and Understanding (Brinsley Schwarz cover)
Marquee Moon (Television cover)
Happy Birthday To You (Mildred J. Hill cover) (to Pat Sansone)
(Don’t Fear) The Reaper (Blue Öyster Cult cover)
Cinnamon Girl (Neil Young cover)
Get Lucky (Daft Punk cover)
Surrender (Cheap Trick cover)
Color Me Impressed (The Replacements cover) (with Tommy Stinson)
Kingpin
Thank You Friends (Big Star cover)
The Weight (The Band cover) (with Lucius)
Roadrunner (The Modern Lovers cover) (with Yo La Tengo)

While we’re waiting for the full set to become available, here’s the rocking Marquee Moon (Television) cover, an 11+ minute jam.

This. Is. Where. I’ll. Be.

Oh Susannah

May 1, 2012

Well, it REALLY doesn’t get more Americana and classic folk than this, a cover of Oh Susannah by Neil Young & Crazy Horse. The cover will be on an Americana release full of other old folk standards. It’s crazy (no pun intended) that they’ll be performing at Outside Lands 2012 this year. No matter whether a fan or not, you just know that seeing them live is a rare music history moment.

OFFICIAL VID: Chromatics – Into The Black (Neil Young cover)

February 13, 2012

Woooweee. Chromatics’ cover of Neil Young’s Hey Hey My My (Into The Black) is a hypnotizing, gorgeous rendition. The haunting guitars are killing me. Killing me! Check it out below, along with some lo-fi visuals. My gosh, this is incredible, and now I wonder if I must make it out to catch them live in a couple of weeks.

Bridge School Benefit

October 25, 2011

BSB

If I weren’t out of town, it’s highly likely I would’ve attended the Bridge School Benefit over the weekend at the Shoreline, as well as several other shows this week or so (including a predicted to be sold out Theophilus London Popscene show). The full sets for Arcade Fire and Beck are saved online for viewing and listening enjoyment. The benefit is an annual event for charity with more of a folk and acoustic flavor. Both Beck and Arcade Fire did a song each with the legendary but oh-so-old-now Neil Young, which are included within these full set videos. It’s great hearing the different spin Arcade Fire put on their performance for the benefit. Love them to pieces.

Oh, and here’s the setlist/video times for the Arcade Fire performance: 1:24 The Suburbs, 7:31 Empty Room, 12:16 Month of May, 15:50 Rebellion (Lies), 21:51 Intervention, 26:59 Helpless (with Neil Young) [Crosby Stills Nash & Young cover], 33:00 Wake Up

Don’t currently have the same info yet for the Beck video
