Nas & Ginuwine’s 1999 hip hop and R&B classic Owe Me gets the snazzy chic treatment by Midas Hutch on a fresh and funky, brassy and groovy flip, and I can’t stop dancing to the juicy plump jam. It’s the perfect way to feel cool while I celebrate another W under my Golden State Warriors’ belt (though I feel bad for Dunn’s face plant). The swagger is strong on this throwback banger, which more than tides us over while we await Midas Hutch’s new EP, which he promises is almost done. Download the dashing electro disco funk track, here.

I was fortunate enough to stumble upon Chicago artist NYLO’s new single Life’s A Bitch earlier. If her name sounds familiar but you haven’t heard of her solo work, it’s likely you heard her on G-Eazy’s Sleepless. Life’s A Bitch, as you might guess, is a cover of the Nas classic. NYLO takes it in a whole new direction with her hauntingly dark and sensual electronic pop and R&B cover. It’s a heart rending, incredible re-imagining.

We already know from plenty of times before, be it original tracks or remixes, that Australian super producer Flume’s chill trap music matches perfectly well with straight hip hop or rap. So, it comes as no surprise, that Nas and Flume can pair hand in hand, under the skillful mixing of San Diego’s Carlos Serrano. He calls the mashup Made You Hold On.

Recently, super hip hop giant Nas remixed UK outfit Rudimental’s gorgeous tune Free featuring Emeli Sandé. Nas adds some free flowing verses to the track, and it’s pretty cool, though I still prefer the fluidity and smoothness of the original. I’m totally in love with Emeli’s verses on the song, so I tend to focus on that more. However, it’s fantastic to listen to the new rendition by Nas, who, for the most part, is very quiet these days. Rudimental’s Free is the song to listen to whenever you’re feeling down or defeated, and Nas’ preaching slides right in with inspirational song.

OFFICIAL VID: Arlissa – Sticks and Stones

Check out this new London pop musician named Arlissa. I’m loving her debut video and her gorgeous, soulful, alluring voice. Her vocals are like a mix between Adele (when in the lower range) and Shakira. The song has an exotic sound and the video is filled with ethereal, ghostly beauty. Good stuff. Sticks & Stones is the title track off a remix filled EP which comes out on March 3. Some of you might recognize this songbird from her duet with Nas last year. Stream it below the Sticks & Stones video. This girl has a REALLY bright future ahead. Arlissa. Remember the name. You’ll hear it a lot more later this year. No doubt.

OFFICIAL VID: Nas ft. Amy Winehouse – Cherry Wine

October 2, 2012

I don’t suppose it’s easy figuring out how to tastefully make a video that features a musician posthumously. Nas did a good job on this, making it classy and retro. Cherry Wine was one of so many buzzed Amy Winehouse posthumous collaborations last year, and it was a deeply satisfying and enjoyable one off Nas’ album Life Is Good. The video for souful hip hop track features some projected images of the late Ms. Winehouse on a brick wall, nothing too discernible and nothing that is overtly indulgent.
