SXSW is a whirlwind week in Austin, and it’s jam packed with commitments, meetings, showcases to manage, and an endless list of immensely talented bands and musicians to catch. It’s simply impossible to do all the things you want to do, and still balance that with all the things you must do. As a result, I missed out on a lot of bands I adore, like Britain’s Blaenavon. Though I couldn’t take home with me a sure to be incredible experience of watching them perform, at least I get to enjoy the music video they shot in Texas while they were there. The trio pair their new Texan visuals with their song Lonely Side, a track from their acclaimed debut album That’s Your Lot. I can never resist the trio’s melodic lilting, sway inducing art rock. I sway and sway away yet again to their languid riffs and plump groovy bass. You can find links for streaming or purchasing Blaenavon’s debut album That’s Your Lot on their website, here.

Seafret’s gorgeous ballad Give Me Something, in all its gentle, heart melting glory, has a new music video to go along with it. The UK duo utterly bewitched me with the melancholic, moving gem when I heard it earlier this year. It’s the earnest, folk tinged title track off their debut EP, out right now on Sweet Jane Recordings.

OFFICIAL VID: Sam Smith – Stay With Me ft. Mary J Blige

June 3, 2014

Something that threw quite a lot of the music loving internet into a frenzy today is this new version of UK soul pop king Sam Smith’s single Stay With Me. The new version features none other than R&B queen Mary J Blige on guest vocals. It’s as heavenly as a match can be, and it’s hard pressed to keep myself from melting away into a puddle of emotion every time I listen to this. They also released a video for the tune, so you can melt and watch the duo sing their hearts out, all at the same time.

OFFICIAL VID: GirlsOnDrugs – Party Talk

May 23, 2014

I love sugary, luminous pop, but at the end of the day, there’s that part of me that just enjoys simmering in dark, ominous music. I shared this song Party Talk by new UK duo GirlsOnDrugs recently. I’m always pressed for time searching for great new tunes to share with you, so I don’t always get to listen to what I feature on endless repeat. When I saw that GirlsOnDrugs had a video out for Party Talk, I took the chance to revisit the song. Immediately, I was convinced I was right to share it the first time around. It’s such a haunting, slinky electronic pop treat. As before, it reminded me of BANKS, but with a more witch house evoking, sinister undertone and some Purity Ring like future pop tendencies. The new video is equally eerie and shadowy, yet seductive and alluring.

OFFICIAL VID: EMA – So Blonde

February 26, 2014

Erika M. Anderson, better known as EMA, is returning soon with her new album The Future’s Void, out April 8 on Matador. We’ve learned that the new release is a departure from the subtle, melancholic, but extremely pensive album Past Life Martyred Saints from 2011. That raw album really grabbed a hold of me a few years ago. I’m digging the new, gritty, grungy direction she’s taking. We heard it on previous single Satellites, now watch the video and hear it again in So Blonde.

OFFICIAL VID: Trust – Heaven

December 21, 2012

Time for some dark pop! Here’s Trust’s latest video for single Heaven off debut album TRST. Toronto artist Robert Alfons does a great job on the alluring, synthy song. It’s an updated retro new wave sound that’s super atmospheric.
