Ohio alt rock veterans MONA have been creating quite astir with their recent return. Their last single, Kiss Like A Woman, was accompanied by a music video that’s racked up well over 600K views on YouTube in the past month. The band now follows up that ravishing garage rock brawler with a fresh new taste from their third album Soldier On, arriving this June on Bright Antenna Records. Not Alone is another sweeping rock song. The song focuses on something I tend to understand too often, that feeling of isolation and loneliness despite being surrounded by people. It’s a boisterous rollicking anthem that arrives just as MONA is kicking off a three stop mini-tour that begins in Los Angeles tomorrow night. Details can be found on their website, here.

In the short time MONA’s new music video for their single Kiss Like A Woman’s been out, it’s already picked up a massive amount of streams on YouTube. Not only does the video convey a much needed message of acceptance, love, and freedom, but it accompanies a ravishing garage rock brawler from the Nashville based Ohio veterans. Kiss Like A Woman is a rowdy and exhilarating celebration of love, dusty yet full of life and zest. And it’s insanely catchy, too. The single is our first taste of a forthcoming project from the band. Snag the track, here.

Smoke & Jackal, Jared Followill’s (Kings of Leon) new project with Mona frontman Nick Brown, seems to be taking off very well after their first single No Tell. The second single off their six track debut EP is Fall Around, a mellow, quiet track. EP1 drops on October 16. Upon visiting Smoke & Jackal’s soundcloud, I realized 5 of 6 tracks are available to stream online. Here’s the other tracks and I’ll include the infectious No Tell again.

OFFICIAL VID: Smoke & Jackal – No Tell

September 13, 2012

Jared Followill’s new project Smoke & Jackal with Nick Brown of Mona has been doing well since they previewed their debut single No Tell a few weeks ago. With the absence of Kings of Leon, any Followill action seems to be cause for celebration. Today, they premiered a music video for the track on VEVO, which solidifies that they are serious about Smoke & Jackal as a full effort project. I, for one, don’t mind. We’ve been sorely missing more good ol’ feel good southern rock and roll. Smoke & Jackal’s debut album drops on October 16. It’s not KoL, but it’s going to do well.

Whoa whoa whoa, what’s going on, buddy? Kings of Leon have been quiet after the controversial mess a year or two ago (time flies), the beleaguered but much loved Followill clan has stayed out of the limelight, and everyone has slowly forgotten the mess that ended their last tour. Talihina Sky has slowly faded into the sunset after showing itself to be one stupendous piece of rockumentary (watch it if you haven’t, it kept me enthralled start to finish and was such an amazing exploration of KoL’s roots and issues). But, suddenly, there is news about one of the members of the clan. Bassist Jared Followill has started a new band with Nick Brown of Mona! Together, they are Smoke & Jackal and they will be releasing an EP in October titled EP1. The lead single off the EP is No Tell, and you can stream it, NOW. It’s like listening to KoL’s lighter fare instrumentals with less gruff, softer vocals! This great tune bodes very well for the new formation. However, I do wonder what’s in the future for Kings of Leon and the rest of the Followills… Are their days of glory really over? I hope not… Their early years were the best. Again, go watch Talihina Sky if you haven’t!

Johnny Marr + Best Coast and many others

October 18, 2011

marr and cosentino

Johnny Marr (of The Smiths) collaborated with a bunch of artists for some Rayban project. For each collaboration, Marr provided some sort of item to the artists and they had to come up with a song based on the item. Collaborators included Tom Vek, Au Revoir Simone, Mona and best of all, BEST COAST!

Listen to all collaborations on Spin here:

Digging the Best Coast collab, of course. Have yet to check out the other 3, but will get to them after I finish losing myself in Bethany Cosentino’s voice and the dreamy surfy sounds of the guitar.

UPDATE: Oh GEEZ the Tom Vek track Film Your Own Television is amazing!!! Will def be resharing once there’s something outside of the exclusive Spin article to share. GEEZ.

OK, all of these are pretty dang good.
