New Los Angeles by way of Boston electronic project Paperwings blew us away last month with the producers’ first release, a stratospheric soaring melodic bass remix of Mickey Valen’s Wildcard. We marked the newcomers as one to watch right then and there. The pair now return with their second tune, and it’s a stunner of a remix, too. They’ve taken RL Grime and Miguel’s Stay For It and given it an exhilarating high voltage makeover, melding future trap and melodic bass in the process. Paperwings’ remix, brimming with regal build ups and gritty drops, is a proper thrill ride. Download the track for free, here.

Henry Steinway, who you know as the legend, RL Grime, will be releasing his new album Nova later this year. It goes without saying that this is going to be a massive record, featuring a myriad of guest talent. RL Grime’s new single Stay For It is already a star studded affair. It features the great Miguel on impassioned vocals. Stay For It is a feverish intense, emotionally charged trap opus. It’s as exhilarating as they come. Together, RL Grime and Miguel soar towards the sun with their grandiose anthem. RL Grime has announced a tour in support of his new album that will take him to the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium on October 20th. Find out more about the tour, here.

There’s been some unexpected but much eargasmic remixes surfacing of late for Miguel’s hit single, Waves. Just the other day, I shared the Apple exclusive Tame Impala remix, and now, we get to jam out to an indie dance version crafted by the great RAC. The spirited, sprightly Waves that RAC gives us is a glistening thrill ride, one that sounds close to a fusion of Twin Shadow with The Knocks. RAC’s remix is a part of Miguel’s Rogue Waves remix EP, just released this past Friday and available on iTunes. Stream another track off the package, the gorgeous Kacey Musgraves featuring version, on YouTube, below. Miguel and Kacey Musgraves is a fine pairing in my book.

Two spectacular and much polar opposite worlds have collided today. Much venerated Australian psych band Tame Impala have remixed R&B, funk, and neo-soul auteur Miguel’s Waves. The track is an Apple Music exclusive which you can stream in the embed above. The union of the two is a pleasant surprise, one that makes Waves so unmistakably Tame Impala in its swooshing guitar, wavy synths, and chromatic dustiness. This is music heaven.

Progressive remix of Miguel’s ‘Coffee’ by WeAreTreo that emphatically makes it’s presence known. It still provides the intimacy of Miguel’s original but offers the caffeinated highs that infatuation brings. It winds you up, excites you, and still has the sex appeal of a Miguel song. Well done.

I swear Chicago duo Win and Woo are like, clairvoyant or something. They’ve remixed some of my favorite new indie tunes in the past, including music by Oh Wonder and Echosmith’s Cool Kids. This past week, I’ve been musing that newcomer Phoebe Ryan’s debut music is ripe for some remixing. Guess who comes along with a remix of her mashup cover of R Kelly’s Ignition and Miguel’s Do You? Win and Woo! Thanks, guys. The original is a soothing, playful listen, and the duo revamp it into a chill, beach ready tropical treat. It’s so carefree and leisurely, I find myself more than ready to grab a fruity drink and dance around in some shades.

Phoebe Ryan is a songwriter based out of Los Angeles who’s written for huge labels and names, but she’s decided to unleash a solo career in the new year. For her first offering of 2015, she has an amazing mashup cover to offer us titled Ignition/Do You, which brings together R. Kelly and Miguel. Ignition/Do You is a surprisingly delicate and graceful pop gem, not qualities I normally associate with R. Kelly and Miguel. Phoebe brings together the originals’ hooking melodies on her elegant track, then tops it off with her Tove Lo like crystalline, saccharine vocals. Watch her video for the tune below.

Los Angeles synthpop duo Monogem offered up an brilliant cover of Miguel’s Simple Things this week. They morph the R&B song into an intoxicating minimalist pop and synthpop track, with a touch of glistening CHVRCHES and some soft grooving HAIM. Monogem’s Simple Things is ethereal and airy, yet it simmers and flares with such flushed desire.

The Chemical Brothers – This Is Not A Game featuring Lorde and Miguel

October 21, 2014

If you’re like me, you’ve probably been waiting days to hear this collaboration between The Chemical Brothers, Miguel, and Lorde. Lorde, as most know, is curating the soundtrack for The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 1, and we’ve already heard her solo contribution Yellow Flicker Beat. Rumors have been swirling for the past while about this triple super collaboration… It’s not everyday we get to hear some brand new The Chemical Brothers, much less one that features R&B sensation Miguel and dark pop superstar Lorde.. so I’m jumping on early to share this This Is Not A Game stream with you. It’s a very interesting and tasty blend of all 3’s distinct styles, a hip hop, pop, electronic cocktail, full of heavy swagger and stomping beats.
