Midnight Mystery Club brings some of the intrigue of the secret San Francisco bicycling society they named themselves after to Southern California via wavey chill, groovy intoxicating Orange County, a cut off the synthwave project’s recent album Reason or Rhyme. I thought I was familiar with Los Angeles and its vicinity, having been born down there and returned on visits plenteous times, but this neon lit world we’ve encountered with Midnight Mystery Club brims with fresh suspense and strange romance. Let’s take a night drive and cruise the streets of Orange County with Midnight Mystery Club. We may never want to go back home. You can stream Midnight Mystery Club’s Reason or Rhyme in full on Soundcloud, here. Purchase from iTunes, here.

Synthwave project Midnight Mystery Club dazzles with infectious ‘Calling Me’. This song has already been featured on College Radio stations throughout North America and The U.K. The group is actually named after a secret bicycling society in San Francisco and their sound reminds me of St. Lucia.

Midnight Mystery Club might be one of the coolest band names I’ve encountered in awhile, having been inspired by an actual secret bicycling society located in San Francisco, close to David Paul Newell’s hometown. To be honest, I don’t even know what a secret bicycling society is. It’s all very cloak and dagger, mystique and intrigue. Lucky for us, David Paul Newell’s music is readily accessible. Thank goodness a song as good as Calling Me isn’t all locked up for an esoteric few. Its neon dapper synthpop and vivacious sleek indie electronica is irresistible, like a perfect summer night combination of St. Lucia and Bag Raiders. The groovy jam is even a free download, here.

Midnight Mystery Club is a project created by David Paul Newell. Though he’s based out of San Luis Obispo, David named his project after a real secret bicycling society in San Francisco, near his hometown. The esoteric mystique of such a cryptic organization certainly carries over into his electronic music. On Run, we’re brought into the murky darkness of a sweltering night occasionally lit in washed out neon lights. The air is heavy with nostalgia as we dance in a sticky mass to this melancholic sleek yet vibrant pumping dazzler, a glamorous mixture of disco, synthpop, and electro. It comes as no surprise that David has an obsession with the late 70s and early 80s after listening to Run. Download the track for free, here.
