If you didn’t catch this news over the weekend, I can assure you, you’re in for a double Monday treat, courtesy of Los Angeles’ Michl, whom we’ve been enamored with for the past several years. Our experiences catching the artist live have only added to our fervor. Michl, who last surprised us by teaming up with production luminary Mura Masa on Better With You, has unleashed a thoroughly bewitching new song named I’d Do It Again.  The dreamy waltzing, lushly glistering ballad carries the intricacy of Fyfe, with Michl leading  us through his sonic garden with contemplative vocals. Alongside the new song also comes Michl’s first-ever music video, a three-part short film titled ‘datum’ featuring two previously freleased songs (Better With You and Out Of Order). The film was co-directed by Michl with Sean Hollihan, and it peels back yet more layers of Michl’s story as an artist. “The entire film was shot in my hometown of Riverside, CA. In the same home, same streets, same local grocery store,“ said Michl of his debut video. "Most would consider Riverside an uninspiring city, but somehow I always had big aspirations. By subtly placing high fashion within the context of my hometown, we were able to re-create that dreamlike optimism I had growing up.” Watch ‘datum’ below. New song I’d Do It Again can also be streamed via Spotify, here.

Lately, Mura Masa has been surprising us by taking the role of producer behind some of our favorite artists’ new songs. His latest such work sees him crafting an intricate future bass soundscape for long time IHM supported LA artist Michl. Better With You proves to be a divine pairing. Michl’s smooth vocals and expert songwriting melds perfectly with Mura Masa’s sonic wizardry on the immaculate balance between electronica and soulful acoustic pop. The contrast between the song’s gentle, fervent strums and the track’s sharp whizzing, dramatic rolling texture is striking. It’s been a long time coming, but Michl will be releasing a debut album this summer, before he heads out on a new headline tour in the fall.

The world could be completely “out of order” and bonkers, as it actually seems to be these days, yet we’ll always have Michl to fall back on for a phenomenal sonic experience. The Los Angeles based singer songwriter provides us with his lushest composition to date in Out Of Order, on which he uses vocal distortion and a sensational layering of rich billowing synths to create a powerfully affecting, thoroughly inebriating effect. Out Of Order is almost like a Michl collaboration with Justin Vernon of Bon Iver. I’m expecting Out Of Order to be jaw dropping live when I catch Michl again live on tour in San Francisco at Popscene come November 17th. Find out more about Michl’s North American tour, here.

Riverside raised Los Angeles based singer songwriter Michl has one of my favorite voices in the alt R&B/soul scene these days. Just listen to his pearly warbles on new single “Waste?”. Michl is ever moody and ever sensual on this convex winding, jazzy opulent, and soulful burning gem. “Waste?” captivates with its spacious rumbling minimalist electronica while it tears at the heart with its anguish and woe. Through it all, one thing is certain: it’s never a waste to spend our waking hours entrapped in Michl’s music. Re-visit his self titled EP and prior singles on Soundcloud, here.

It’s been almost half a year since I finally managed to experience Michl live at Popscene in San Francisco, but I still can’t get his creamy arching voice and dramatic alt & electro R&B out of my mind. They’ve taken deep root in my heart, it seems. Michl swoops out of Los Angeles to send tingles down our spines with a haunting new ballad named Everything’ll Change. It’s a solemn and poignant, opaque and suspenseful piece that unfolds at a tense deliberate pace. “Everything’ll change”, though we seem frozen in a static state… But a bond will break, a catalyst will arise, and motion will come. I’m reminded of the hushed stillness and muggy thickness of the air right before a storm breaks.

I’m not sure what I did to please the music gods, but after having to wait a few months in between each of Michl’s first three songs, the dashing crooner has given us two new gems in as many days! I suppose the fact that a debut EP is arriving this Friday might explain our good fortune. Michl follows up on earlier this week’s Gone with poignantly heart rending Broken Roots, on which he demonstrates even more of his astonishing vocal calisthenics. Broken Roots mercilessly leaves my heart a shatter with its passionate and tormented alt R&B. It’s nearly surreal that I’ll get to listen to Michl belt this song out in person at Popscene in San Francisco come September 9th. I don’t know if my heart can take it.

The recent announcement of a tour that would bring Michl to Popscene in San Francisco on September 9th left me dancing in joy. I still recall scooping my jaw off the floor when the Southern Californian artist first arrived with torrid twisting, blistering intense Kill Our Way To Heaven last year. I’ve been a rabid fan since. Michl continues to impress with his latest swooning ballad, a wistful and sorrowful indie electro and alt R&B gem named Gone. Center stage is Michl’s magnificent voice, slinking magnificently and evocatively through the song’s haunting exquisite soundscape. Hit up Michl’s Soundcloud to revisit his prior tracks and to find out more about his mini-tour on the sidebar.
