Brighton based ambient electronic five piece Phoria returns with a beautiful acoustic rendition of their song Melatonin, one of so many stand out tracks from their criminally underrated debut album Volition. The already introspective song takes on a new level of deep contemplation on Phoria’s spectral hovering recording. This “unplugged” version is a soft, gentle kiss, from which emits exquisite and moving sorrow. Despite my love of Volition, I’ve yet to see Phoria live, a sure to be transcendental experience I’ve had at the top of my to do list for a long time. Luckily, the British band will soon be making their way out to Austin for SXSW. I look forward to finally catching them at Fancy PR, The Burning Ear, and Vinyl Moon’s Double Dutch showcase on March 18th. Find out more about that stacked event, here. You can also stream Melatonin (Unplugged) via Soundcloud below. Debut album Volition is out on iTunes, here.

It’s been a long time since we’ve heard from UK band Phoria. In fact, one of the last things I wrote about the guys late last year was that they were a favorite band of 2014. You can imagine how delighted I was to find out that they had new material to fill that Phoria hole in our hearts since. New single Melatonin is a first taste from Phoria’s debut album, and it’s unimaginably magnificent. The single is named after the hormone that regulates our circadian rhythms by anticipating the daily onset of darkness (and which people take to fight insomnia). Melatonin encapsulates that moment when shadows elongate under a dramatically setting sun and a great anticipation of what’s to come permeates the air. Shapes seem malleable, patterns are shifting, change is converging. Melatonin is darkly beautiful and flawlessly entrancing, reminding me, as Phoria often does, of sensational music by the likes of Thom Yorke, Asgeir, and The Acid. Melatonin is out on X Novo. Phoria’s debut album will be out in 2016.

SSPU

Just posted on Facebook by the one and only Silversun Pickups:

hello to all you wonderful people out there. hope you had an amazing halloween yesterday and happy dia de los muertos. currently we’re back in the studio working on our third full-length record. as we speak – brian is recording guitars, joe is gear-porning on the moog website, nikki is reading the new yorker and i am writing this message. thank you for being patient with us while we play instruments and turn knobs and tap feet. we will be finished soon, i promise. in the meantime, we will be releasing a 10-inch vinyl for record store day’s “back to black friday” on november 25th. it’s called seasick and it will include 3 unreleased songs. we hope you will enjoy…~x

Fans will get a taste from Silversun Pickups with Seasick, a 10-inch vinyl release featuring three previously unreleased tunes—including the title track as well as b-sides “Broken Bottles” and “Ribbons & Detours.”

YES! I’ve been wondering when we’re going to hear anything new from SSPU! 3 unreleased songs on November 25th! That’s not too long from now!
And since there is nothing new from them to share, and since I love them so much, and since it’s been awhile… here’s a few tracks off debut Carnavas (still my favorite album out of their 2 by far) for a short revisit. And no I’m not including Lazy Eye though that song is epic epic epicness, especially the album cut with the long instrumental solo. But it’s just been everywhere and everyone has heard it so much. Look it up yourself if you crave for it.

Holy CRAP this album is SOOO good through and through. I’m going to have to dig it up and listen front to back again…

On a related note, Silversun Pickups was so sweet when I briefly met them at Outside Lands a few years ago. Nikki stopped the rest of the band mates to take a photo with me while they were walking away after a long session at the autograph tents (which I happened to come upon as it was ending and no more people were allowed to go up). Nikki walked by us as they left. Brian was in a plaid shirt of course, sucking on a cigarette… and they all politely regrouped around me and posed for the photo. Awww. 😉
