Texas native and esteemed producer and avant-pop artist Matthew Dear links back up with those much adored Quin twins on fabulous new synthpop song entitled Bad Ones today. We already know from that fabulous cover of Tears For Fears’ Pale Shelter a few years ago how fantastic it is to hear Tegan And Sara and Matthew Dear together. Sleek dazzler Bad Ones is the perfect sleek burbling, drafty cool combination of the two acts’ vocals and Matthew Dear’s chimerical shimmering production. You can grab the song from various outlets, here.

I had the pleasure of catching Sylvan Esso live again when they played two sold out shows at the massive Fox Theater in Oakland last week, and I couldn’t help but continually glance at my fellow concert-goers with a gleeful smile as I watched them dance in joy to the North Carolina duo. Our love affair with Amelia Meath and Nick Sanborn began when they made their debut four plus years ago, and it’s never dimmed in intensity. I was fortunate enough to catch their punchy, edgy electro pop and folktronica in the intimacy of San Francisco’s Bottom Of The Hill back in 2013, so the Fox was a much vindicating and rewarding experience. The pair also released a few remixes of Die Young, one of many stand out tracks off sophomore album What Now, last week. Much beloved alt R&B duo Rhye gave Die Young a stringy meditative edit that I find quite breathtaking. You can also stream a dancier, perkier remix of the song by Audion (aka Matthew Dear) below. It’s a crackling, skittering remix both electrifying and mesmeric.

I encountered a lot of really sick collaborations today in my music discovery travels, including this new track from Berlin based San Francisco native Lane 8. He teams up with brilliant, versatile musician Matthew Dear on Undercover, a taste off Lane 8′s upcoming album Rise. Matthew Dear’s brooding, baritone vocals are thoroughly entrancing paired with the song’s hypnotic beat. Undercover slowly blossoms into uplifting, exultant grandeur. It easily reminds me of a house leaning Bon Iver song. Lane 8′s album, Rise, will be out July 17th on Ajunadeep. Pre-order on iTunes.

Matthew Dear ft. Tegan and Sara – Pale Shelter

December 18, 2013

While Tears for Fears has been busy covering other bands, other bands and artists have been busy covering Tears for Fears. The latest cover of one of their classics is a collaboration between Matthew Dear and twins Tegan and Sara, who consider Tears for Fears a huge influence on their music, unsurprisingly (I mean, have you listened to their heavily 80’s flavored album Heartthrob?). Listen to their excellent version of 1983 tune Pale Shelter below, filled with Dear’s slick, pulsing electronic production and the Quin twins’ pop vocals. Fits like a glove!

Check out this sweet track by German producer DJ Koze titled My Plans that features versatile musician/producer Matthew Dear! It’s got some soul and a lil bit of funk, as well as an insane amount of layered samples and complexity. At times, the track brings TV on the Radio to mind for me, particularly the earlier vocal sections before more of the glitchy sampling kicks in. My Plans will be on DJ Koze’s album Amygdala, out on March 26.
