M83′s 2016 album Junk turned out to be a rather divisive affair. Some fans were absolutely head over heels for Anthony Gonzalez’s playful tribute to many music styles of the past, while others didn’t quite appreciating his sudden departure from his band’s signature tour de force synthpop. You can count me in the former group, and I’m more than happy to re-visit album cut Do It, Try It now that M83 has suddenly decided to release a belated music video for the dizzying, skittering house meets ragtag meets electro disco blowout. The video for the song is a wonderfully creative fusion of live action and animation, which reminds me of SAFIA’s video for Paranoia, Ghosts, & Other Sounds. It’s a light hearted, imaginative visual accompaniment to go with Do It, Try It’s delightful caprice. Junk is available from major outlets, here.

We’ve all listened to M83′s biggest hit, Midnight City, millions of times over, but have you ever heard it the way LUCA LUSH presents it to us today? I’m pretty sure the answer is no. My jaw near hit the floor when I encountered the prolific producer’s re-imagination of the ubiquitous hit. This is a bass heavy romper of a MIDNIGHT CITY, one where at the stroke of midnight, we’re out on a dance floor lunging sky high to its melodic lifting future bass and getting down & dirty to its gritty trap. LUCA LUSH’s MIDNIGHT CITY is night and day to M83′s original. It’s a brilliant and exhilarating re-interpretation. Grab the track for free, here.

May start posting these ongoing “MOOSIQ MOSAICs” direct on IHM for those who haven’t had time to catch up on daily features and want to stream some rad new tunes via a handy Soundcloud playlist. Been doing this for awhile now, but likely many are still not aware (particularly if you don’t follow IHM on Twitter or Facebook). This one’s sonic gold, so many sizzling hot jams featured earlier this week on June 15th! Only songs that are streaming in full on Soundcloud are included in these playlists, snippets and previews are excluded.

Some might consider this next announcement some of the best music news of the year so far. It’s certainly high up there for me too, if not at the very tippy top of my list. Much venerated synthpop and electronic project M83, fronted by the great Anthony Gonzalez, has announced their next album, albeit without Morgan Kibby who has left the band to continue pursing her solo career. New album Junk will be out April 8th on Mute Records, and they’ve unleashed the very first single from the album. M83 chooses to go in a surprisingly electro disco direction on Do It, Try It, a playful dalliance that starts with some ragtime keys before it launches into psychedelic levels of spacey electronics. Do It, Try It is strangely addicting though a completely different animal compared to the sweeping cinematic electronica we’re used to from M83. Speaking of animals, the song also comes with some adorable Yorkshire Terrier visuals in its YouTube stream. I’m not sure what’s going on with this new M83 project, but I’m digging it lots so far.

Is it just me, or have the references to a specific type of drug become much more blatant in pop music lately, though it’s been glaringly present for a long time now in other genres like rock and hip hop? White Sea, or Morgan Kibby of M83, goes full out with an ode to youth and recreation. Hooking Stay Young, Get Stoned is Morgan Kibby’s most bubbly pop song yet. While I miss some of her magnificently high flying vocal range on the mostly mid ranged tune, it’s certainly a sugary, infectious treat. Stay Young, Get Stoned is available now on iTunes.

M83 – Holes In The Sky feat. HAIM

March 3, 2015

We all know how epic soundtracks for big Hollywood flicks are nowadays. The next massive soundtrack to look forward to, whether you’re a fan of the blockbuster or not, is the soundtrack for the next edition of The Divergent Series, Insurgent. Today, we get to hear a new M83 song off of it, and it features the much popular HAIM sisters. It’s two acts I’m superbly fond of in one track, plus it’s HAIM in a way we’ve never heard them before, so I’m quite satisfied. Anthony Gonzalez has always been the brilliant genius when it comes to crafting music perfect for affecting movie moments. Tender Holes In The Sky, though not as sweeping as some of M83’s other music, is still a magnificent, luscious piece, and HAIM goes for a more simmering, less grooving sound with their guest vocals on the track. Is it beautiful? Yes, yes indeed. Other acts featured on the Insurgent soundtrack include Royal Blood, Woodkid (featuring Lykke Li), Anna Calvi, Zella Day, SOHN, Imagine Dragons, and Joseph Trapanese. Yea, buddy. Watch this space, I have a feeling I’ll be sharing many of those with you, considering my undying love for most of these acts. The soundtrack gets a release on March 17th.

I’m almost certain M83’s Midnight City is the most played song of the decade, and I’m certainly not complaining. It’s near impossible to get tired of that fantastic song. Anthony Gonzalez created something timeless and classic with the dreamy electronic pop song. But I also much relish the fresh twist on the tune that SAINT WKND, formerly known as WKND, has put on the much ubiquitously loved song. The German producer, who already proved his mettle many times over with so many splendid remixes in the past, gives Midnight City a more lustrous future bass sheen that’s more of an atmospheric, gliding experience. While the original might be the perfect pensive night time soundtrack, I have an intense urge to listen to SAINT WKND’s version at sunrise, as the world, emerging from its shadows, starts to sparkle in the rays of our rising sun and city lights lurk faintly in the distance.

Who’s up for an uber sweet remix of The Weeknd’s Often Rough? It’s time to delve into this amazing rendition by none other than White Sea, aka Morgan Kibby, also of M83. That’s right. Morgan Kibby/White Sea remixed The Weeknd. Dope, right? I suppose in some ways, it makes sense. White Sea’s beautiful, soaring electronic pop music carries plenty of sexy grittiness in its lyrics. Morgan also likes to be a potty mouth on many of her songs, though she has an incomparable ability to make curse words sound 150% gorgeous. On her remix of Often Rough, she layers in her own vocals, creating a compelling, haunting duet and giving the song plenty of her glistening, soaring dramatics.

OFFICIAL VID: M83 – Lower Your Eyelids To Die With The Sun

August 21, 2014

It’s throwback Thursday, and I’ve gone through my fair share of throwback videos and songs over the course of today, but M83 has one for us too, sort of. Back in 2005, the Anthony Gonzalez lead outfit released their album Before The Dawn Heals Us. That was the year I first heard about them, thanks to the remix they contributed to Bloc Party’s Silent Alarm Remixed, a compilation of amazing renditions of songs off their debut album from the previous year. On Before The Dawn Heels Us was a captivating, cinematic instrumental, named Lower Your Eyelids To Die With The Sun. Today, we get to watch a previously un-released video made for the song. Soundtracked with M83’s dreamy electronic music, anything can seem grand and beautiful, even normally disturbing car crashes. This is the kind of music that makes you feel like there is so much out there greater and bigger than little ol’ you, a whole cosmos, and there’s something so fantastic, almost religious, about that feeling. M83 is planning to re-issue their first three albums on August 25 via Mute.
