Imad Royal, the D.C. talent we’ve been praising since he went by the name of Royal early on, just released his must listen EP, Everything Happens, and it’s just about everything we’d wished for, a flawless urban pop and electronica amalgam that enraptures across five splendid tunes. Today we visit opening track M.I.A. together, and it’s such a swaggy popping ballad brimming with heartfelt endearment. You can also stream Everything Happens in full on Soundcloud.

Any M.I.A. song or video is expected to be a sheer force to be reckoned with, so it’s more than fitting that the oft controversial, ever brazen artist returns with a tune named P.O.W.A. A return to Paper Planes form suffuses this sharp jolting hip hop meets electronica anthem, which arrives with a self directed video whose visuals rival the grandiosity of many of her prior videos. A decade after Paper Planes and having influenced countless other artists in the scene, M.I.A. proves she’s still absolutely incomparable and inimitable.

I sure as heck hope you didn’t miss my post a few weeks ago when I shared the brand new GENER8ION, featuring M.I.A., because that would be a travesty. Even if you did, you must re-visit The New International Sound (Part. II) with me now, because the new video for the jagged, fiery electronic song is pure epic entertainment. You’ll see what I mean once you hit the play button on the video below. It features 36,000 students of Shaolin Tagou, the biggest fighting school for kids in China. GENER8ION is French producer Surkin’s exciting new multidisciplinary project, and The New International Sound (Part. II) is one riveting, glorious track. It’s off a new EP out now on iTunes.

I’ve featured great remixes and original music by respected French producer Surkin in the past, and today, I learned that the talented individual is focusing on a new project of his named GENER8ION. GENER8ION is described as a “new multidisciplinary project” orchestrated by Surkin, with an EP to be released on June 15th. It all sounds very intriguing and ambiguous, but upon listening to the GENER8ION remix of Röyksopp’s I Had This Thing, I was fully entranced for near four minutes of electronic bliss. The remix, which was apparently used to soundtrack Louis Vuitton’s Autumn/Winter show, is an animated, intricate futuristic tweak on the original that nimbly surges and hops with staccato liveliness. GENER8ION also revealed his eagerly anticipated collaboration with M.I.A. today, a menacing, fierce track named The New International Sound (Part. II). The trappy treat, which you can stream below, is also off Surkin’s new EP. GENER8ION will kick off a string of headlining shows this summer, and I’d surmise that this music will be glorious live.

M.I.A. dropped a new demo today, and it’s easily one of my favorites from her in a long while. Platforms is more subdued than much of her noisy, exuberant album Mantangi, but it’s no less entrancing, with its chromatic, vivid layers of avant garde percussion. There’s a dreamy melancholy and nostalgia to the mellifluous tune that we don’t often hear from M.I.A.. This reminds me of the controversy that came to light pre-Mantangi, when M.I.A. made some statements about her label wanting her to release more mirthful and upbeat music. Perhaps this Platforms demo represents some of what they did not want on Mantangi. If so, M.I.A. should seriously release this, and whatever else wasn’t “happy” enough, on a new record.

Washington, D.C. based producer Eau Claire is slipping a stunner in before the year ends. And just in time, too, because her remix of M.I.A. classic Paper Planes is a sublime and thrilling treat to dance away to while the last minutes of 2014 whittle away. Wonderfully luminous and full of mirthful good vibes, this Eau Claire remix is a new tropics imbued, laid back melodic direction, but a chilled out nu-disco vibrancy still sets the song’s buoyant groove. Highly addictive and so resplendently good, this is a must add to your New Year’s dance party mix.

M.I.A. has remixed Beyoncé’s Flawless, and the new flip on the tune is called Baddygirl 2. Is it sick? Why, yes, yes indeed, it is! The flip also includes samples from Queen B tune Diva. It’s a whomping, high energy, frenzied, tweaked out affair. Supposedly, M.I.A. created this remix ages ago, but after waiting tirelessly for months for Beyoncé’s camp to get back to her with an approval, she finally lost her patience. Thank goodness for that. And the track’s still up, hours later! I can’t wait to see M.I.A. at BFD 2014 come June 1. I’ve never seen her live yet, and I can only imagine how much fun she is live.

OFFICIAL VID: M.I.A. – Y.A.L.A.

November 16, 2013

M.I.A. released a super vibrant, artsy video for her single Y.A.L.A. On it, she collaborated with fashion house KENZO. It’s as intensely colorful and explosive as you’d expect from the fiery artist. I’ve yet to pop brand new album Mantagi in for a listen, but I’m sure it’ll be a ton of fun to listen to.
