If anyone’s looking “extra fly” right now, it’s Minno, and if anyone’s “touching the sky” in ecstasy, it’s me, riding high on the East Coast producer’s new remix of Kanye West classic Touch The Sky, featuring Lupe Fiasco. To be honest, it’s been ages since I’ve revisited Touch The Sky, or anything off of Late Registration. That era feels like it was many lifetimes ago. Kanye has evolved through so many different artistic states since that release. I mean, he’s (supposedly) holed up like Justin Vernon in a log cabin in the woods right now to write the next iteration of his music! Minno brings back some old school Ye with his remix, but this Touch The Sky has been transmuted into a horn blaring, synth shuddering modern trap anthem. Minno’s remix of Touch The Sky is a free download, here.

So it’s only been over a month since I found out about 23 year old producer ANGELZ, via his prior remix of Mac Miller and Pharrell’s Onaroll. It blew me away so much that I sat there listening through his prior tracks and I “hearted” each and every one of them on Soundcloud. Fast forward to today, and ANGELZ, who used to ghost produce for the likes of 50 Cent, Lil Wayne, Pharrell, and many others, has dropped a fresh track full of that intense fire of his. This time, he’s flipped Lupe Fiasco and Jill Scott’s 2006 collaboration Daydreamin, giving it his exhilarating infusion blend of hip hop, house, garage, deep house, and future house. Dark, edgy, and thoroughly entrancing, it’s a splendidly dirty and epic banger to add to his growing list of sensational hybrid offerings.

I must say, this remix of Kanye West mid-2000’s classic Touch The Sky, featuring Lupe Fiasco, is pure fire. The sick future house take on the song comes from Sydney, Australia based producer HOUNDED. It’s a frenetic, hooking, and pumping treat that gives both gives me chills and raises my heart rate.

OFFICIAL VID: Lupe Fiasco – B*tch Bad

Initially, I wasn’t too into this song when I clicked play. I figured it’d be another more mainstream rap video about partying and “hoes”, especially with the title of the track. Also, there isn’t too much of a stand out melody or groundbreaking beat on this. But it’s one of those tracks where you should really focus on the flow and the verses Lupe throws down. At that point, it becomes far more meaningful and interesting. He seems to be making a statement about women and how they feel they need to be perceived and how they need to act. Rap music that makes you think is always a plus.

I knew it was about time to check for DJ Earworm’s end of year mix!

Here it is, DJ Earworm’s epic mashup, United State of Pop 2011 (World Go Boom). I love how he always mixes the videos too. So, what do you think? Better than United State of Pop 2010 (which I thought was okay)? How about 2009 (which I thought was absolutely incredible)?

Remember, this is 100% an American perspective only. Enjoy!

Tracklist in alphabetical order based on artist names:

Adele – Rolling In The Deep
Adele – Someone Like You
Black Eyed Peas – Just Can’t Get Enough
Bruno Mars – Grenade
Bruno Mars – The Lazy Song

Enrique Iglesias – Tonight (I’m Lovin’ You)
Foster the People – Pumped Up Kicks

UPDATE: After a few listens, I believe 2009’s was still the best. While very fun and a great showcase, the 2011 mashup seems far less cohesive and far more messy. Outside of this mashup, I think it bespeaks something very good about the year in music in the US though… I believe the top pop songs of 2011 are actually much harder to all mashup together into a mix due to the variety of sounds and genres that were being put forth and embraced. It’s been a great year for music, no doubt.

EDxHENDY the piano man

November 9, 2011

Came upon this guy’s youtube channel since he’s amassed a following for his amazing piano covers of songs, most of them R&B and hip hop trax from the likes of The Weeknd, Drake, etc but some other stuff too. I’ll just share a few here, if you like this kinda stuff, make sure to go to his youtube channel where he has a large repertoire of incredible covers. He’s got some mad talent for being able to do piano covers (note, not PLAY a cover with someone’s sheet music but to create his own versions on a piano).

I’ll start with one of his most recent, The Weeknd’s Thursday, which multiple artists such as Illangelo and The Weeknd himself have been directing people to go listen to:

The guy’s obviously a big The Weeknd fan (duly deserved), here’s another one:

Next, one of my favorite Kid Cudi songs:

Howzabout a little “classic” Lupe?

And of course, OF COURSE, there HAS to be a Lana… We’ve heard a piano cover by Jamie Cullum of Lana’s Video Games, but hear this and find out how good Blue Jeans can be on the piano when adapted by EDxHENDY! Love it and wish I could access sheet music from this fella for a lot of these songs so I can tinkle away on the piano too and be a poser. 😉
