[PREMIERE] La Bouquet – Loveless (Sunshine Sessions)

Leonardo Da Vinci once famously said, “a life without love, is no life at all.”  Even if some of our hearts have tucked themselves away to avoid getting crushed for the umpteenth time, we can live vicariously through the stripped back beauty and intimate charm of this finely rendered new acoustic video from La Bouquet. We join Bryan Sammis (The Neighbourhood, Olivver the Kid) and Jake Lopez as they melt us to no end with their poignantly heartfelt rendition of Loveless. La Bouquet made a huge imprint on the new music scene over a year ago with the debut single, a sleek stirring, infectious driving torrent of earthy alt rock and rambunctious alt pop. You can watch La Bouquet’s music video for Loveless, here.

The band’s performance of Loveless in their new “Sunshine Sessions” video is immaculate. Every strum, each twang, and even the raspy drawl of La Bouquet’s vocals on this gentle lullaby are deeply affecting, as if rising and reverberating from secret chambers within our own hearts. “Maybe I’m just hopeless enough to feel alone, but selfish enough to write this song,” they coo. Ah, but that’s there they get it wrong. It’s selfless of them to gift us such an earnestly moving ballad. It’s a heart-on-the-sleeve confessional, a piercingly sad and strikingly sincere meditation that feels particularly vulnerable and exposed on their cozy and pastoral new arrangement.

Loveless can be found on La Bouquet’s four track debut EP, Heavy Sunshine, which is available from iTunesAmazonGoogle Play, and Spotify. Keep up with La Bouquet via FacebookTwitterInstagram, or their website, here.

Once again, a new stripped down acoustic video for an incredible song has keyed us into an amazing rising artist and her music. New York’s Aisha Badru is an urban folk singer songwriter who delivers soul stirring music with a supple & emotive voice. You can watch her perform her recent single Bridges in an intimate setting below, but make sure you watch the video for the original above. Bridges is lifted from Aisha Badru’s debut album, due out this year. It follows on the heels of her 2015 Vacancy EP, which garnered a lot of attention from the advertisement world when her hushed single Waiting Around was utilized for a viral Volkswagen add in South Africa. That buzz continues to grow with delicate and understated Bridges, a tenderly stirring gem that feels like early, dusky BROODS gone ambient, atmospheric Daughter. Bridges is available, here.

It’s incredible how versatile and talented young actors and actresses are these days, particularly ones from hit Netflix shows. Aside from almost every major cast member involved in Stranger Things, Dylan Minette, the dreamy actor who plays Clay in 13 Reasons Why, is also a flourishing musician with his own band. In case you missed out on our previous feature on Wallows, let me fill you in on this three piece from Los Angeles. Their dusty crunching, guitar embroiled music is top level stuff, and Dylan’s voice is fantastic. He reminds me of Interpol and the Strokes on Pulling Leaves Off Trees, for which Wallows just released this live studio clip. It’s one of the alt rock band’s latest singles and a rollicking good time. Download and stream the knotted rocker, here. For another fine recent single from Wallows, jam out to Uncomfortable below, too. You can stream Pulling Leaves Off Trees off Soundcloud, here. Perhaps Wallows can soundtrack season 2 of 13 Reasons Why themselves. The band kicks off their North American tour on January 24th right here in San Francisco with a show at the Great American Music Hall.

I’ve been “cruising” through the day, thanks to the latest chapter of Gallant’s In The Room series, on which he pairs up with other talented musicians to bring us sensational performances. If you’re on our twitter, you likely caught my tweet out about this clip this morning. That’s how excited I was by the new release. Everyone’s favorite golden voiced crooner and R&B soul sensation Andra Day have linked up this amazing one take cover of Smokey Robinson’s legendary hit, Cruisin’. Just let “the music take your mind”. It’s taken my whole being.

London four piece ISLAND is one of those bands I can never get enough of. Given the chance, I’d love to take them with me on a camping trip with my closest friends, so we could listen to them all night long besides a warm campfire while the milky way stretches out above us. Earlier this year, ISLAND released their gorgeous EP A Place You Like. Opening track Waves proved itself to be one of my favorites from the band, only topped off by debut single Stargazer. ISLAND has released a live acoustic recording of the raw soothing coastal blues cut as part of a new EP, and this stripped down, bare bones performance is just as entrancing if not even more powerful. It’s a stark reminder that I’ve yet to see ISLAND live, and I really hope I’ll get to do so someday soon. The band’s EP, A Place You Like, is available from iTunes, here. Their new Lie & Acoustic EP can be found, here.

That long rumored Kristen Stewart and CHVRCHES collaboration has finally arrived! KStew turns in an exceptional directing performance in the video for a new live rendition of the Scottish electropop band’s song Down Side Of Me. The song, originally from CHVRCHES’ excellent sophomore album Every Open Eye, gets a beautifully stripped down treatment in the understated and finely nuanced video. Kristen Stewart’s creation feels incredibly intimate and expressive in its subtle imagery and meticulous detail. In fact, we find ourselves cheek to cheek with Lauren Mayberry as she delivers a powerful and exposed rendering of the song. This new version of Down Side Of Me is CHVRCHES’ contribution to a 7″ vinyl records compilation that benefits Planned Parenthood. “7-inches for Planned Parenthood” will be released this fall, and it will also feature artists and bands like Mary J Blige, Bon Iver, St. Vincent, Sharon Van Etten, Feist, John Legend, Foo Fighters, and far, far more. For details, visit the project’s site, here

Oh, how I wish I could’ve been present when San Francisco’s own rising indie stars Cathedrals performed their new Christmas song to an intimate congregation of music loving people last week. You can watch the footage of that performance below. Cathedrals’ Johnny Hwin dons a dapper suit, lays down his usual guitar/keys, and bewitches us with dexterous piano skills while Brody, with her sister on harmonies, serenades us with that husky magnificent voice of hers. California Christmas brims with exquisite yearning, and it affects the heart powerfully despite its acoustic sparseness. The more I listen to the song, the stronger the spell it casts on me grows. Cathedrals is giving away the song as a free download as part of their holiday giveaway campaign in which fans can enter for a chance to win goodies like the last of their debut EP vinyls, the fortune of hearing their next single early, other treats, and so forth. The giveaway ends on December 22nd, so hurry up and click, here. In other news, Cathedrals announced the completion of their debut full length the other day, and I, as well as many other people I know, can’t be more excited. We’re looking forward to 2017 with bright and eager eyes.

20 year old New Orleans singer songwriter Ambré will be gracing the Popscene stage at Rickshaw Stop this Friday night, and she proceeds to add fuel to my excitement with a fiery new track named No Service In The Hills. She even links up with the Bay’s own R&B queen Kehlani on the song. The torrid R&B and hip hop jam is tensely gripping and voluptuously hypnotic. No Service In The Hills follows on this rising chanteuse’s 2090 mixtape from earlier this year. I greatly look forward to seeing Ambré on Friday, but wouldn’t it be a treat if Kehlani magically appeared out of thin air to perform their new song together? One can dream…. Coincidentally, I Heart Moosiq is running a Twitter contest for free tickets to the show, which also features the San Francisco debut of Australian talent Tkay Maidza. Retweet on Twitter, here, and come join us on a sure to be spectacular evening.

Prepare to have your heart strings tugged, hard, as we dive into a new live video that British duo Aquilo just unveiled this past week. If you think you’ve grown accustomed to their emotive, soulful pop, You’re Like Me will prove you mistaken and leave you reeling. The sorrowful acoustic ballad is crisply exquisite and beautifully atmospheric. I find myself haunted all over again by the fact that I had to miss Aquilo when they made a rare appearance in San Francisco previously. The new track comes ahead of Aquilo’s headline UK tour in October and will appear on their forthcoming debut album, a release I await most eagerly.

New Irish lads Harbouring Oceans have swept me off my feet with their debut single Enso, which they reveal alongside a live video much absorbing. Harbouring Oceans’ bluesy, soulful sound, which the five piece describe as alt pop/art rock, is earthy heartfelt and passionately rousing. Their harmonious vocals carry the same gospel imbued depth of Hozier but gliding effortlessly through a richly opulent, plush organic atmosphere with the dashing allure of early Maroon 5. It’s immediately apparent that Harbouring Oceans is a talented band to watch. Enso is available now from Bandcamp.
