WATERS’ new track is named ‘You Don’t Know What You Want’, but the thing is, I know exactly what I want. I want that new album ‘Something More!’, and I want it now! Unfortunately, I still have a few days to wait as the California five piece won’t be releasing their third record on Vagrant/BMG until Friday, May 19th, but I confess I’ll be very much content in the meantime listening to this hearty chugging cut. Lead singer and SF native Van Pierszalowski explains of the song: “’You Don’t Know What You Want’ is a mashup of various flashes of conflict and disagreement I’ve had in relationships in between long stretches of highway and days spent hanging out at the Subway on Kodiak Island in Alaska. There have been so many times in my life where I have literally no idea what is going on in my partner’s head and I wanted to make it all into a fun pop song so I could deal.” Soon after ‘Something More!’ arrives, I’ll get to see WATERS at Live 105′s BFD at the Shoreline Amphitheatre. June 10th can’t come any sooner, after May 19th comes first, of course.

Though I’ve already seen Los Angeles duo POWERS many times over these past couple of years including quite recently when the Nylon Tour brought them back to Popscene in San Francisco, I’m still giddy with excitement over the knowledge that I get to see them yet again when Live 105′s BFD hits the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View come June 10th. The Subsonic Tent is going to be set afire and the crowd’s going to be over the moon, like the “Man On The Moon”, when Crista Ru and Mike Del Rio stirs them into a “Dance” frenzy with heavy grooving, “Legendary” moving pop spectaculars like Beat Of My Drum, Sunshine, and their The Knocks collaboration, Classic. Newly revealed treat Closer will surely add plenty more heat to their set despite its mellower demeanor. Closer is a dreamy strumming, saccharine drifting sparkler with a touch more soul and a dab more languor in its handsome strut. You’ll just went to “get closer” to that special someone to the tune of this POWERS, then shimmy the night away with them like it’s senior prom all over again.

Last year, Silversun Pickups dropped their fourth full length, and Better Nature, despite my love of their in between albums, is probably my second favorite SSPU release since debut album Carnavas. I’ve loved the Los Angeles alt rock band for a full decade now, and found myself particularly elated by album track Circadian Rhythm (Last Dance), a wonderfully catchy and lushly wistful anthem which seems to channel hints of Jimmy Eat World and Motion City Soundtrack in its lulling melodies and nostalgic sentiment. SSPU unleashed a very pink and shimmery music video treat for Circadian Rhythm today. On top of having a new video out for the song, the band has also been announced as part of the lineup for Live 105′s BFD this June at the Shoreline. Though I’ve seen SSPU plenty times over, even meeting them once at Outside Lands Music Festival many suns ago, I’m more than excited to see them once again. They are, after all, one of my favorite bands.

Big ups to San Francisco Bay radio station Live 105 and music director Aaron Axelsen for this fantastic find. I first heard Kali, from indie alt rock band Taxes, on Soundcheck last night, and was immediately taken by the sweeping emo charmer. I give it all major bonus points for the fact that the five piece is a local San Francisco band, too! Kali is a lush, cinematic number off Taxes’ forthcoming full length It Never Ends, out in July on Breakup Records.

Introducing: Satellite Stories

Last night, I was following my frequent Sunday night routine of listening to Live 105’s Soundcheck on the radio to enjoy indie music I love and hear what else is great out there that I haven’t stumbled upon, since the show always spotlights some of the best new music around. Turns out, there’s this Finnish alt pop/rock band that I’ve never noticed till now, though Satellite Stories has had 2 albums out since 2012. Their addictive sound easily brings to mind music by Two Door Cinema Club, but sometimes mixed with a touch of Passion Pit synthy vibrancy, or even a smidgen of Phoenix. Campfire is an excellent tune off their 2013 album Pine Trails. I was immediately taken by it last night. Watch the video for the tune below. Also, check out jangly recent single Australia (Don’t Ever Let Her Go) and soaring, synthy Lights Go Low below Campfire, both also off Pine Trails. Maybe you know these guys and their music already. If not, you should really check them out.

OFFICIAL VID: Muse – Follow Me

December 12, 2012

Follow Me is one of several of my favorite tracks off Muse’s latest album The 2nd Law. It’s one of the few that seems to really harken back to early Muse (with a bit of extra oomph in the bass), reminding me more of tracks off early albums Origins of Symmetry and Absolution. It’s hard to believe it’s been over a decade since Origins of Symmetry, time sure flies. Muse has become such a superpower in the machine since then. Way to conquer the world, fellas! I was just at local radio station Live 105’s Not So Silent Night music fest the other night when I recounted to my friend the NSSN I went to ages ago when Muse was one of the earlier openers (as were The Killers and a few others). I realized that was back in 2004! Sheesh. Anyway, check out the show footage video for Follow Me. It’s such a grand, classic sounding Muse track that live footage is probably most fitting of the song, bringing me back in time and creating a wave of nostalgia. Muse, you still rock my socks off sometimes.

For those of you in the San Francisco Bay, looks like Live 105 has outdone themselves with the BFD 2012 lineup!

Acoustic Fairytale

January 3, 2012

Just listened to this great acoustic version of Seeking Empire’s Fairytale, recorded in my favorite San Francisco Bay Area radio station Live 105’s studios with our very own Aaron Axelsen. Seeking Empire has been gaining a lot of momentum this past while, and as Mr. Axelsen posits in this very video, they’ll be playing at BFD 2012! I’ll include the regular cut of the track below as well. Local pride!!!!!
