Today’s a very special day. Not only is it one of my favorite ghoulish holidays, Halloween, but a surprise new Gorillaz track has surfaced, too! Garage Palace features hip hop sensation Little Simz on guest vocals, and it comes with an awesome animated music video in which she fights zombies alongside the band. The track comes off of the deluxe vinyl release of Humanz, due out as a “Super Deluxe Vinyl Boxset” on November 3rd. Pre-order, here. Garage Palace is available, here.

As someone who doesn’t watch The Voice, much less The Voice UK, I wasn’t aware of the fact that Becky Hill is an alum. Instead, she’s been on my radar for a couple years now due to her guest stints on songs by other amazing artists’ I love, having collaborated with the likes of Rudimental and Oliver Heldens. On new solo song Back To My Love, she enlists the rap vocals of electrifying British hip hop artist Little Simz. The two make a powerful pair, Becky’s powerful and robust voice and Little Simz’ riveting delivery leaving my blood boiling with sweltering R&B passion. Drum and bass rolls give the song an animated smoothness while gospel backing vocals add to Back To My Love’s grandeur. The single drops this Friday on Eko Records.

Blood Diamonds, or rather, the producer formerly known as Blood Diamonds, seems to love changing his name nearly as much as Prince once did. The latest moniker he’s chosen to adopt is DiamondDahi, which replaces prior name bloodpop. As DiamondDahi, he’s dropped a droopy electro hip hop track named N.M.B.D., which features hotly buzzing and much talented British hip hop artist Little Simz on guest vocals. One of my favorite tracks from Blood Diamonds is still Phone Sex, featuring Grimes. N.M.B.D. carries hints of that syrupy track, but permeated with Little Simz’ intense machine gun emceeing. The end result sounds a bit Rihanna like yet so fresh and new. Download the track for free on Soundcloud.

German songstress Lena’s new single sees her teaming up with some fantastic talent, including fellow Germany based newcomer Kat Vinter and British hip hop artist Little Simz. Even before I listened to the song, I had a feeling Catapult was going to be an immensely gripping and spectacular listen. Sure enough, the passionately rousing and emotionally compelling pop song is a theatrical and tense journey, as well as a BANKS meets Ellie Goulding powerhouse ballad delivered with both graceful elegance and a smoky beauty. Little Simz’s rap verse adds another huge dose of somber sentiment to the grandiose song. The single is taken from Lena’s album Crystal Sky.

Joywave has a new one for us, and this one’s kind of different. The New York indie pop and synthpop act goes murky and grimy on new song Bad Dreams, which features vocals by hip hop acts Mick Jenkins and Little Simz. It’s a droopy hip hop side we haven’t seen yet of the band, and it’s mesmerizing. There’s a simmering, fiery intensity to the song and a melodramatic magnificence. Joywave’s chorus on the song is paired with an epic operatic intensity that’s both surprising and spellbinding. And I’m always hypnotized by British rapper Little Simz’ rapid fire delivery.

UK crooner Raleigh Ritchie enlists British rapper Little Simz on his latest, the smooth and booming Cuckoo. Produced by Stefan Ponce, Cuckoo is a playful, whimsical treat, carrying many surprises, including some snazzy jazzy moments. If songs had swagger, this one would have it in spades. Little Simz’ verses come off cool as a cucumber, gliding naturally over the resounding, infectious “cuckoos” of the track.

Whoops. Did I omit to feature fresh young London rapper Little Simz previously? My bad. Let me fix that. Bump her new track Enter The Void, produced by fellow London artist Balistiq. It’s a sick rap track and a great showcase of Little Simz’ skill in delivering prose, which seems to flow so easily and smoothly under her command. Dark and ominous, Enter The Void demands all of your attention once you press play. Little Simz’ debut EP E.D.G.E. is set for release in June, and she’s going to be one of the big new rap artists of the UK, no doubt. Watch her recent video for Mandarin Oranges Part 2 below, one of the first tunes I heard from her that keyed me into the young future star’s talent.

Introducing: Little Simz

February 28, 2014

Little Simz is an up and coming 19 year old rapper from London, and boy, does she has some talent. Even Jay-Z has taken notice and is gunning for her. Lil Simz released her fourth mixtape Blank Canvas on Jay Z’s Life+Times website. She’s also an actress back at home. Lil Simz flow is hypnotic and smooth, raw and passionate, immediately grabbing a hold of my attention and never letting go. Watch the video for Deranged below, and check out a few more tracks underneath, including the lavish Mandarin Oranges Part 2, and its predecessor Mandarin Oranges, which was produced by Sango and is a collaboration with Waldo. Angel Haze, I think you have some serious competition.
