Cleveland’s SomeKindaWonderful have been mostly silent since they released their eponymous self titled album two years ago, which included one of my favorite alt singles of that year, Reverse. So, I’m pretty pleased that the band has returned with new music. The electro-rock-pop group ventures into fresh territory on new single Lion, which sports a gritty hip hop cadence and the shadowy, sooty slink of The Neighbourhood. Lion is quite the unique concoction with its rugged guitars, lilting beats, and glitchy electronic tone. Lion is out now on Vertigo / Capitol, a division of Universal Music. SomeKindaWonderful also released a droopy intoxicating alt/electronic track named Wheels Up a few months ago featuring Casey Veggies. Stream below.

The title names of Saint Mesa’s songs seem to be one word firecrackers. They pack a lot of expression and punch into those few letters, be it Jungle, or Roses, or now Lion. An image immediately appears in the eye of the mind. Even before we listened to the California artist’s latest single, we already have an idea of what’s to come. We expect something majestic, imposing, and towering, particularly since we’ve come to realize how evocative and dramatic his alt pop music can be from past amorous experiences. Saint Mesa’s Lion is a riveting listen, replete with dark orchestral flourishes and prowling horns. This “king of the jungle” doesn’t scamper, it doesn’t cower, it doesn’t hide. It comes straight at us with sooty aplomb and fanged assurance. We’re brought to an exotic world by the electronica, rock, and pop found on this unique sonic concoction, a stampeding flurry of thundering percussion and audacious hooks. Purchase or stream the powerful single, here.

Kacy Hill is utterly bewitching on her latest single, Lion. The song leaves me deeply regretting the fact that I missed out on her when I was in SXSW earlier. Lion is also the Los Angeles artist’s first new song in a very long while, and it’s a striking reminder of her talent. The alt pop song carries some very baroque beauty. Soft pounding drums and Kacy Hill’s rich vocals take us into a world of grandeur as

regal

as the king of the jungle that the song is named after. Lion evokes music I also adore from the likes of Vaults with a touch of Florence Welch.

Lion is the sort of breathtaking pop that calls right for my heart. It comes from Welsh singer songwriter CASI, whose voice is absolutely stunning on the debut single. Cosmic grandeur and baroque elegance imbue this compelling first song, whose dark undercurrent and gothic timbre are like a combination of Florence and the Machine, Vaults, and Kate Bush. CASI’s Lion is regal and remarkable, much like the noble creature and king of the jungle it’s named after. Lion is available now from iTunes.

Sticking with the deep, shimmery, electronic side of things with this insane remix of Four Tets’ Jupiters by young UK producer Happa. The textured techno release will be sharing double A-sides with Jamie XX’s Lion remix on next week’s 12". The kid’s got talent, that’s for sure. And to share A-sides with Jamie XX? That says a lot.
