Droves of people probably stayed up past midnight even if they’re normally not night owls, because they knew it was well worth it to do so for the all too rare arrival of new LCD Soundsystem. James Murphy promised two new tunes, and two new tunes the legendary dance punk and electro-rock band have delivered. American Dream is a synth whirring, dreamy drifting tune with which we waltz back into the 80′s, while Call The Police, which you can find below, is a spiraling gem that brings back some classic LCD sound. Both new treats arrive just as LCD Soundsystem is preparing to play SNL tomorrow night. I suppose this might be the most epic LCD Soundsystem week in forever. Perhaps it’ll be the most epic LCD Soundsystem year in forever, if there’s an album on the way?

We must have been very good boys and girls this year, because Santa brought us a very special present this morning. Defunct legends LCD Soundsystem came out of retirement for a brief moment with a brand new Christmas song. LCD Soundsystem! Who we never thought we’d ever hear from again! Sway away to mopey, not at all dance punky Christmas Will Break Your Heart, which in some ways serves to remind me of the sad fact that LCD Soundsystem is no more. James Murphy reports that he’s been singing this one to himself for eight years, but finally decided to record it.

It’s hard to resist the snappy beat and rich funk on Purple Disco Machine’s remix of The Juan MacLean’s A Simple Design. The original is already such a killer jam, as one would expect from the superb The Juan MacLean team, made up of John MacLean and LCD Soundsystem’s always riveting and refreshing Nancy Whang. Now, lose yourself in the visuals for PDM’s roller disco meets Caribou styled deep disco house transformation. There’s something so incredibly captivating about watching Nancy Whang annunciate the song’s lyrics. The remix is part of the A Simple Design package, coming out on August 31st through Defected Records.

Today, Brooklyn dark pop duo MS MR released their Fantasy Remix EP, which includes their hit tune Fantasy and the above sweet LCD Soundsystem cover. MS MR’s version of Dance Yrself Clean is an addictive piano pop anthem that builds up to some intoxicating, major brownie points garnering sax sections (me and brass, as always). The duo have been performing the cover live for a long while now, but it’s only for this EP that they recorded a studio version for our listening pleasure. I’m ecstatic about MS MR’s recent found popularity, after having zealously gushed about them since early last year after falling for their song Bones. I was super fond of their 2012 EP Candy Bar Creep Show, and I very much enjoyed debut album Secondhand Rapture early this year. Way to go, MS MR. Another track off today’s Fantasy Remix EP is the previously featured, deep house remix of Fantasy by Kele Okereke of Bloc Party. Let’s listen in on it again!

REFLEKTOR

It’s Monday morning. I have a crap ton of things to do and take care of. I dropped off my beloved car for repairs this morn because of getting hit by some lady in a parking lot. I’m driving a rental. No fun. I miss my car. I miss Burning Man. I miss my BFF, who left back down to SoCal yesterday. I’ve had a string of bad luck with many things lately. BUT I’M GRINNING AT MY DESK LIKE AN IDIOT, FLOATING ON CLOUD NINE. Why? WHY, you ask? Well, it’s September 9. And true to their word, ARCADE FIRE has released their new single REFLEKTOR. I’m on listen number 2 and freaking out, because it’s so damn good. It’s only going to get better with each subsequent listen, and trust me, I’m listening to it many, many, many times for many, many, many days. I can’t wait to hear the rest of AF’s new album. Head over to the Reflektor website to watch the new interactive video for Reflektor filmed in Haiti (likely AF’s favorite place in the world) and listen to the amazing, intricate, complex new song. It’s filled with the usual endless layers of instrumentals we expect from Win, Regine, and company, including a ton of brass (thank you), but also a healthy heavy dose of Afro beats and that sound of the moment, the funky groove. Arcade Fire, I love you. I’m so glad all the excitement wasn’t a let down. But how could it ever be? Arcade Fire, you genius, you. I, like many others this morning, am still digesting Reflektor. It’s no simple tune easy to take apart and put into words. Go take a listen yourself if you haven’t yet. It’s magnificent.

Be amazed.

EDIT: I was so giddy and blabbering so quickly that I forgot to mention a couple very important facts about Reflektor. 1) It’s produced by the great James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem & DFA Records, duh). 2) Reflektor features BOWIE. THE BOWIE. YES. DAVID BOWIE.

Soulwax remixed Pulp!

April 19, 2013

And so all the Record Store Day exclusives will begin to flood us. Belgium electronic rock band Soulwax remixed Pulp! Here’s their sick rendition of Pulp’s Afer You (which was produced by James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem). Whoooowee. The remix will drop on 12" vinyl this Saturday. I’m visiting a record store on Saturday, how about you? Record Store Day!

New Cold Cave (practically a new BAND)

September 24, 2012

Whoa, what’s going on with Cold Cave? I just found out that they’re working on a new album and have just dropped a preview that is majorly kick ass, but on top of that, they’ve swapped to a new member lineup! AND, that member lineup can be considered a supergroup! Why? Well, the new lineup includes, of course, frontman and many project veteran Wes Eisold, but it also includes Samhain’s London May, LCD Soundsystem/Melvins’ David Scott Stone, Blood Brothers/Jaguar Love’s Cody Votolato, and AFI’s Hunter Burgan! Stream their new tune A Little Death to Laugh, a very synthy and gothy darkwave noise rock track. I like. I’m looking forward to what else this new Cold Cave will give us in their new album, which will probably be due out sometime next year.
