Though I’ve enjoyed my fair share of Latin dance music in the past, I must confess that my love of certain subsets within that vastly diverse landscape has recently grown manifold, partly due to the emergence of indie sensations SOFI TUKKER. When I heard Jarina De Marco’s TIGRE, I was instantly hooked. The Los Angeles based recording artist, whose roots lie in the Dominican Republic and Brazil, takes me deep into a lush Amazonian rainforest with her verdant cool, worldly exotic jam. I can’t help but picture a noble tiger adorned in festive & colorful plumage, shaking its rump playfully to TIGRE’s quivering beats. In fact, I want to be that tiger. TIGRE is featured exclusively on the Broad City Original Series Soundtrack, which will be available October 28th on all formats via Milan Records in association with Comedy Central Records. The track left me craving for more Jarina De Marco. If you feel the same way, check out Paranavigar below, a genre defying fusion of moombahton, dancehall, trap, and Brazilian house.

Mi Negrita

February 9, 2013

Psych folk musician Devendra Banhart has been slowly previewing tracks off his album Mala, which comes out on March 12. So far, everything has been very impressive and showcases his songwriting expertise. The third track to be shared from Mala is Mi Negrita, a Spanish language charmer. There’s just something so romantic about the guy crooning in Spanish on an acoustic, earnest tune. According to Pitchfork, he said the following about singing in Spanish:

In Spanish, I can have a lot more flexibility. I have a limited vocabulary– in English and in Spanish– but with Spanish I can get more into the sound of the words, I can have more fun with it. I can even get more autobiographical in Spanish. I feel comfortable revealing more, expressing something sincere about trauma or pain, which is not really a space I’m comfortable occupying.

Well, my Spanish isn’t good enough to understand most of what he’s singing on Mi Negrita, but I can feel the expressiveness and emotion just the same. Or maybe I’m just a sucker for romance. *swoon*

Vadoinmessico remix from Crystal Fighters

November 8, 2011

crystal fighters

I just discovered Crystal Fighters the other day and shared their latest video Champion Sound. Totally loved it and now that I’ve thought of it, I’m gonna have to go listen to it. They just threw up a remix they did of Vadoinmessico’s Teeo. It sounds pretty great with their Basque instruments and Latin-British sounds. No idea what the original track sounds like, haven’t found it online yet. I’m guessing it already has Spanish influences in the track considering the artist name and song name, but I can’t be sure.

Vadoinmessico – Teeo (Crystal Fighters Remix) by Crystal Fighters

I did, however, find the following NPR Tiny SXSW performance from Vadoinemssico earlier this year of their track In Spain.
