My Own Mystery wraps around us, warm and caressing, smooth and crisp, a heartwarming suffusion of sparkling R&B soul and airy synthpop. It comes courtesy of Melbourne singer songwriter and multi-instrumentalist LANKS, and it features Sydney future soul talent NGAIIRE as a welcome guest. The sanguinely comforting ballad is LANKS first new release of the year after his Viet Rose EP. It illuminates the heart with its cushiony synths and gently snappy beats, as well as the combination of LANKS and NGAIIRE’s perfectly matched vocals. We can’t help but ponder a new ‘mystery’ after listening to My Own Mystery many times over…. Will LANKS and Ngaiire ever link up for another song? We’re hoping so…

Long time IHM praised multi-instrumentalist and producer Will Cuming makes his first appearance of 2017 as LANKS on Comfortable, a soothing melter of a follow up to his 2016 EP Viet Rose. Comfortable I truly am, spending my evening sinking into the soft cushion that is LANKS’ smooth, seamless vocals on this misty swelling, gently throbbing synth and alt pop ballad. The heartrending effect of Comfortable’s delicate yet atmospheric beauty evokes a cross between BANNERS and Coldplay. Comfortable is a free download, here. LANKS will be touring Australia this August. Find out more, here.

It’s a slinky swooning, squishy bewitching affair on LANKS’ Holla, the latest from a time and time again exceptional Melbourne talent. LANKS displays his finespun production skills on this beautiful electronic ballad as well as melts us with his satin cooing. Holla engulfs us into a fantastical world that alternates between halcyon smooth moments and urgent compressed junctures. The future beats accented song comes alongside news of a fresh EP, Viet Rose, which will be out on October 14th. The EP is named after LANKS’ favorite laksa restaurant in his hometown, and it was co-produced by Andrei Eremin (Chet Faker, Hiatus Kaiyote).

Slinky smooth R&B soul and clattering stout alt pop comes our way from Melbourne’s LANKS, who makes a fine return on Bitter Leaf. Despite its name, Bitter Leaf is a sublimely inebriating song much pleasant to devour on an endless loop. Its rich texture and velvet crooning are thoroughly riveting and entrancing. The talented multi-instrumentalist and producer is currently supporting future soul queen Ngaiire on her national album tour. Here’s to hoping that we too get to experience his engaging stage act here in San Francisco someday soon. Bitter Leaf, which LANKS co-produced with Andrei Eremin, is a free download, here.

Just A Gent’s Heavy As A Heartbreak, featuring Lanks, is such a spectacular song, we’ve heard an abundance of remixes of the track already. But I promise that you’ll want to set aside some time to check out this new one by California’s Xan Griffin. The producer’s rendition of Heavy As A Heartbreak starts out light and airy, as if propelling us into a world of bright and hopeful fantasy quite disparate from the very heartache Just A Gent addresses on the original. The track slowly builds upon itself before erupting with dubstep and melodic bass power, but there’s still a wistful weightlessness to this version of the song that, though emotionally charged, gives off an uplifting and optimistic radiance. Xan Griffin’s official remix is majestic and grand, an ILLENIUM and Adventure Club evoking spectacular. It’s also free to download, here.

We can always count on Melbourne’s LANKS to spellbind us with some exquisite, unpredictable soundscapes on his music, but never has he been more magnificent than on new song Golden Age. Crisp falsettos glide alluringly through an enchanting forest of suspenseful folktronica. Golden Age ripples and flares, darts and recoils in the lush foliage of that magical forest, spinning and twirling with dizzying speed, its haunting eccentricity and complex detail like a blend of Hundred Waters with Son Lux. Golden Age is a free download, here.

Several months back, Just A Gent dropped an ethereal future bass, or “lovestep”, song named Heavy As A Heartbreak, featuring vocals by fellow Aussie LANKS. Its riveting oscillations and rippling bass take on a new light on a remix crafted by Miami producers Lookas and SMLE. The two link up to dish out a wide, majestic expanse of jolting future bass and jabbing trap that leaps, chops, and pulses to great heights. The exhilarating remix is also available now on Spotify.

Just A Gent sends me into a state of bliss with his new original, an ethereal future bass pumper named Heavy As A Heartbreak, featuring fellow Australian LANKS. Just A Gent likes to call his melodic bass music “lovestep” a fine and fitting descriptor for the amazing tune. Heavy As A Heartbreak is truly heavy with its frenetic oscillations and ripping bass, which contrast bewitchingly with LANKS’ smooth and creamy vocals. My own heart seems to rise and drop with each undulating cut of Just A Gent’s chill trap synths. It bathes in euphoria and swims in anguish simultaneously. Heartbreak, after all, is as beautifully stirring as it is reeling with its obstinate intensity.
