We’ve been fans of Future Classic-signed Australian singer songwriter and producer Hayden James for a very, very long time. In fact, our love for his debut single Permission to Love has never faltered or faded, and it’s still one of our favorites today. So when a new Hayden James song crops up, we prepare ourselves for some true music magic, which is exactly what we get on Just Friends, which features creamy crooner Boy Matthews on guest vocals. Just Friends straddles the line between vivacious dance music and Years & Years like upbeat R&B pop with its pumping bass and incendiary disco beats. Download/stream this glorious Hayden James return, here. Then dance the night away to the friend-zone anthem.

In the interim since we shared the video for Morgan Saint’s enchanting debut single You, this gifted New York chanteuse has unleashed her debut EP, 17 Hero, a superb five track collection of evocative pop songs. Today, let’s partake in its second song together. Just Friends is a ravishing beauty, a nimble amalgamation of lushly layered alt pop and warm enveloping synthpop, all topped off effortlessly with Morgan Saint’s supple voice. It’s yet another eloquent reason to fall head over heels for this ascending starlet, whose refined music also evokes fellow rising stars like Maggie Rogers and Julia Michaels. Morgan Saint’s debut EP is available from iTunes, here.

Long, long ago, in the early days of IHM, we established that Nicolas Jaar is a brilliant musician. Whether it was his amazingly textured solo works of art, or his work with Dave Harrington in Darkside, he was always creating walls of moving, profound sound. Jaar has a new project these days. He recently teamed up with Sasha Spielberg under the name Just Friends. I can’t help thinking of Samantha Urbani teaming up with the talented Blood Orange in comparison. It doesn’t help that Samantha Urbani is from the band Friends, too. My mind’s going in loops! But I don’t think I’m really reaching that far here. Just listen to their new soulful single Don’t Tell Me. Like Blood Orange, Nicolas Jaar lays down some really sick, ornate production. Like Samantha Urbani, Sasha Spielberg lends her R&B inflected, soulful vocals. Combined, we get a propulsive, well crafted, grooving song that boasts some finely tuned balance.

Shlohmo x Nicolas Jaar x Sasha Spielberg

Oh, boy. What do you get when you cross the genius of Shlohmo with the talent and sheer brilliance of Nicolas Jaar and Sasha Spielberg? Listen below. Shlohmo remixed Avalanche Just Friends (Nicolas Jaar + Sasha Spielberg). The end result is an insanely atmospheric, shadowy, post-dubsteppy, choppy screwy, warped, mind melting composition with clicketty clacketty Burial and Four Tet like moments. I’ll definitely be revisiting this one late at night.
