joan tenderizes our hearts then liquefies them into molten goo with their new retro-pop heartrender, ‘i loved you first’. The Little Rock, Arkansas pair, who’ve also announced spring tour dates with San Francisco’s Geographer, deliver a prom-ready ballad drenched in tender melancholy and wistful sentimentality. ‘i loved you first’ encapsulates everything you wanted to say to your middle school first crush, but couldn’t without an adequate amount of self growth and reflection. Glazed chords, aching guitar, and joan’s sweet, glossy cooing brings back all the bittersweet feels of those ill-fated crushes and doe-eyed, youthful romances. If you missed out on joan’s music despite the fact that we’ve been fervently featuring the pair’s tunes for the past year, check out their prior releases, here. I have loved many songs named Tokyo over the years. Just off the top of my head, Dan Croll’s Tokyo and Imagine Dragon’s early song of the same name come to mind. Now, we can add Little Rock, Arkansas duo joan to that list too. The pair sweep us back off our feet with more of their fleecy velutinous synthpop and scarlet grooving R&B pop on Tokyo, an 80s and 90s inspired buttery ballad that follows on the success of prior singles ‘take me on’ and ‘love somebody like you’. Tokyo’s lush foliage and flushed heat pair St. Lucia’s verdant resplendence with the suave glissade of Great Good Fine OK. For more of joan’s nostalgic pop, visit their Soundcloud, here. 2017 brought us three remarkable excursions with this pair. We can’t wait to see what 2018 brings us. joan will be playing three shows in early January in Nashville, Columbus, and Pittsburgh. Keep up with the band on Facebook, here.

joan swooped us up with their brand of 80′s pop and 90′s R&B inspired synthpop earlier this year when the duo made their debut with “take me on”. It made a mad dash for my LANY, Great Good Fine OK, St. Lucia, and The 1975 loving heart. Well, Alan Thomas and Steven Rutherford are back, and they’ve strengthened the spell they’ve cast on me with “love somebody like you”. I swoon at their feet as they serenade us with their buttery synthpop and plucky alt pop jam. joan says of the romantic track: "love somebody like you is a song for someone that you obsess over. they seem out of reach, but you can’t help but to take a chance and go after them". You can grab the gooey melting song from iTunes, here. You can re-visit debut single “take me on” below, while you’re here.

joan, a new indie pop project created by Alan Thomas and Steven Rutherford, is fond of 80′s pop and 90′s R&B. Their penchant for those decades is more than apparent on debut single “take me on”. This summer luscious swathe of flushed romance is more than infectious and an obvious must for fans of bands like LANY, St. Lucia, and The 1975, as well as 80′s great, Phil Collins. Snappy hooks, echoing drums, and creamy vocals cut through a thick pastel mist on “take me on”, a song that was co-produced and mixed by Tim Pagnotta (Walk the Moon, St. Lucia, Wild Belle, Saint Motel). joan explains that the single is “about spending tonight and forever with the one you love.” Snag this fabulous debut from iTunes.
