I gladly re-visited The xx’s latest album I See You whilst I was out in the beauty of the wilderness a few weekends ago after a long time away, and I was quickly reminded of how immense a release it is. On Hold is one of the album’s stand out tracks. Who else, but Jamie xx himself has given the song an unexpected remix that emphasizes the trio’s brilliance? On Hold gets a hypnotic and glorious workover brimming with Jamie xx’s signature underground sound. Step into the dark club, get on the dance floor, and contort your body in visceral pleasure to the remix, which even comes with a freshly minted music video. Jamie xx’s remix of On Hold is available now on limited 12″ white vinyl from The xx’s store, here.

If you haven’t watched the new video for The xx’s I Dare You yet, and I have countless times since yesterday, prepare for some awesome cameos and a sweet visual ride. I Dare You is of course one of the many splendid tunes from The xx’s most recent album, I See You. Its video stars Paris Jackson as well as everyone’s favorite Stranger Things actress Millie Bobby Brown, and its a magnificent ode to the city of Los Angeles. “I’ve been a romantic for so long,” sings Romy Madley Croft on their song. So true. That’s probably why I find this video so appealing, and one of the reasons I love music so much.

It’s 2017, and we’re all hoping for a better new year after the bumpy ride we’ve had in 2016. There’s no better way to kick it off than fresh new The xx. Say Something Loving comes from their highly anticipated third album, I See You, out soon on January 13th via Young Turks. The trio douse us with a warm flux of their signature acoustic and atmospheric electronica blend while Romy and Oliver serenade us with their familiar vocals on this follow up to lead single Hold On. Jamie Smith presents us with a gently moving soundscape. Altogether, Say Something Loving is ripe with saccharine candor. There’s a comforting gust of love and hope from its unsettled core that promises to keep us afloat whatever may come in the new year. Pre-order I See You on iTunes or Amazon if you still haven’t done so, for some bizarre reason or other.

OFFICIAL VID: The xx – Sunset (Jamie xx Edit)

July 10, 2013

On Record Store Day back in April of this year, there was an exclusive release of a 12" vinyl that included two Jamie xx edits of songs off Coexist. Limited to 4000 copies and released by Young Turks, the vinyl is a gorgeous thing to behold. Guess who has a copy? ME! The songs remixed by Jamie xx included Sunset and Reconsider. Today saw the release of an official video for the Jamie xx edit of Sunset. The video is filled with footage from a vintage French television channel. The remix itself is a hypnotic deeper house re-imagining of the standout song. Sunset is likely my favorite track off Coexist. Who doesn’t in some way or other relate to the lyrics?

Jamie xx DJ set

June 21, 2013

Everyone’s beloved x filled band has been touring in support of their album Coexist lately. Their European leg of the tour was designed the “Night + Day” series with an endless array of other amazing talents joining the lineup. During their stop in Berlin, Jamie xx spun an awesome 30 minute DJ set. Red Bull Music Academy has posted it for us to stream! Thank you, Red Bull! The set features the likes of the late Gil Scott-Heron, Florence and the Machine, the xx (of course), and tons more goodies.

OFFICIAL VID: The xx – Fiction

June 6, 2013

Oh, dang. Where have I been? I just realized The xx dropped a new video this morning for Coexist track Fiction. Why wasn’t this plastered all over my social network feed? Seemed NIN was more prominent! Well, anyway, here it is… the Oliver centric Fiction! I already launched into a long post about seeing The xx live again last weekend and how great they are, so I’ll leave it as is instead of repeating my usual tribute and endless gushy love.

Maya Jane Coles remix of The xx

June 3, 2013

Over the weekend, I was privileged to catch The xx live for the third time in my life. My first time was years ago in a small venue, second time was at a fest, and this last time was at the sizable Greek Theatre in Berkeley (my beloved old college/grad school stomping grounds). Even though I was lucky to see them in a small venue back in day, I might have to say this was the best time for me yet, despite the larger venue. Sound-wise and intimacy wise, nothing beats that first time. However, I had already guessed that the gorgeous outdoor amphitheatre and the perfect evening weather would fit the billing nicely. I also knew that The xx, while originally awkward on stage (as many artists are in the beginning), have become far more confident. As a result, they’ve toned down the over fogging and have a much more comfortable stage presence. And they delivered. Boy, did they deliver. Loving each and every The xx song also helped me enjoy the show to the utmost possibility. It’s only perfect timing today that buzzing London deep house producer Maya Jane Coles released a remix of The xx’s Fiction (off of sophomore album Coexist). Here’s to hoping I get to catch Maya Jane Coles live someday sooner than later.
