OFFICIAL VID: Willy Moon – Yeah Yeah

November 9, 2012

Ladies and gents, if you haven’t heard of New Zealand retro pop singer songwriter Willy Moon yet, you will. I’ve been meaning to feature a post on him for awhile now, so here we go… This hot rising New Zealand star is sure to make some major headlines internationally in the near future. He has a very stylistic, unique, confident sound that blends dance punk, indie pop, blues, rock and roll… even a bit of doo wop. It’s some interesting stuff. So much so, that he caught the great Jack White’s attention who signed him to his ThirdMan Records label this year. Yeah Yeah is his latest single and video, available now on iTunes and featured in the Apple iPod television advertisement. Check this cool cat out! He’s like a mix of Bruno Mars and Jack White himself with some The Black Keys thrown in.

The kid has no debut album out yet, but his very first debut single in New Zealand back in 2010 was I Wanna Be Your Man. I’m not too sure how much of a household name he is over there, but we’re sure to hear more about this guy on this side of the pond shortly. I also wouldn’t be surprised to see some awesome hip hop collaborations down the road. I could think of a ton of great producers and rappers for him to work with. That rock and hip hop thing is starting to become more and more popular. Just look at the soundtrack for The Man with the Iron Fists. Wu-Tang Clan and The Black Keys? Hawwwwt.

Jack White Pop-up At Outside Lands

August 14, 2012

There’s no better place to do a pop-up than San Francisco’s Outside Lands. It fits the spirit of the fest oh so well. Jack White surprised everyone with an afternoon set by the food trucks in the woods this weekend. Turns out, even Tom Morello showed up and did a surprise set there in the woods (cue Bon Iver music). I, sadly, had no idea this was going on and was off running around between other sets and completely missed the magical moment. Don’t hate me, but I also sacrificed Jack White’s set later that day to catch Santigold and Bloc Party (I’m a huge Bloc Party fan and it was well worth it). But if I could clone myself and hit up everything I regretfully had to miss, I would’ve hit up Jack White’s pop-up and his official set at Lands’ End on the Polo Fields. So, don’t feel too jealous watching these next couple of amazing clips. I didn’t get to see it live, either. Mr. White chose to use his all female backing band for the woods surprise show, and switched to his all male backing band for the official set. Here’s his performances of Hotel Yorba and Love Interruption. I wonder if these folks felt like they were incredibly lucky to have been grabbing some food truck bites right around this time! Note to my future clone: camp out in the woods. STAY there. Wait for musical surprises.

The genius that is Jack White has released a Hype Williams directed video for Blunderbuss track Freedom at 21. One word: badass. Is that supposed to be two words?

Jack White & First Aid Kit

July 11, 2012

Continuing with the epic on stage collaborations with this semi-decent video of First Aid Kit performing on stage with the great Jack White in Paris! Previously, Swedish folk sisters First Aid Kit (they are awesome) covered The White Stripes’ We’re Going To Be Friends for a benefit album, with the help of Bright Eyes (they are way too awesome). So, it was only fitting that Mr. Jack White pulled the sisters on stage at his performance to do a rendition of the tune together.

This might already be old news for those of you who were as excited to find out about the Outside Lands 2012 lineup as I was. It was the first thing I checked on this morning. But it ain’t right to not share it on here anyway. Also, check out the tongue in cheek lineup video with MC Hammer. It’s Hammer time!
