The virtues of being a VIRTU fan are endless. That much has been more than apparent after his stunning performances on both remixes and originals. And now, the Los Angeles based electronic artist has taken on Imad Royal and Mark Johns’ sensational rendition of Nirvana’s Heart-Shaped Box for his latest track. VIRTU’s remix starts out slow and deliberate, building ever so intensely towards its mind melting drop. Dubstep and electro house interweave on the glorious edit. Shuddering bass and laser-cut synths leave us trembling in bliss. Why can’t there be more rock and electronica crossovers like this magnificent electro grunge track? Download/stream the track, here.

Ásgeir – Heart Shaped Box (Cover)

March 27, 2014

The sad 20 year anniversary of Kurt Cobain’s passing is almost upon us, and already the Nirvana references and mentions have been increasing at an exponential rate. We’ll likely be hearing a ton more covers of Nirvana as April gets closer, but this week, Icelandic musician Ásgeir has given us what is perhaps one of the most beautiful covers of Heart Shaped Box ever. His debut album In The Silence is one of my top albums of the year so far, and this is one delightful additional treat from the rising artist. On top of his gorgeous vocals, he also puts together some stellar, intoxicating production for the cover. The song literally explodes from a simmering piano pop ballad to a multi-layer, intricate wall of irresistible sound about 2 minutes and 30 seconds in. It’s so Ásgeir, and so good.

Heart Shaped Lana Box

The video quality is sketchy, but you still get the gist of it. Sultry. Sweet. Raspy. More material for controversy and debate. Here’s Lana Del Rey’s cover of Nirvana’s mega classic Heart Shaped Box. Love it? Hate it? I like it. Nirvana fan boys probably hate it. No one’s supposed to touch Heart Shaped Box, much less Lana, eh? We’ll agree to disagree. 😉
