I’m a pretty huge fan of Silicon Valley, the television show on HBO that pokes fun at the start up and tech community close to where I live (the supermarket I go to all the time a few blocks from home was even featured in one episode). It’s probably one of the few comedies I actually love, which is rare indeed considering the fact that I prefer to spend my time watching all that is darkly twisted or mysteriously cerebral. Those that don’t watch Silicon Valley may be surprised to learn that it has a killer hip hop soundtrack (tangential sidebar: even The Leftovers had some awesome hip hop moments). Over the weekend, they closed out their most recent episode with this wicked new trap jam from Hudson Mohawke. Yes, that’s right, a fresh new Hudson Mohawke track premiered at the end of a Silicon Valley episode. Ominous glowering Passports features Queens emcee Remy Banks on gritty riveting vocals. The single will be on the official soundtrack for Silicon Valley, arriving June 23rd via Mass Appeal Records, which can be pre-ordered, here.

Sometimes, I wonder if Pharrell actually lurks on the pages of IHM. We discovered and featured Maggie Rogers over two years ago, supposedly just before he discovered Maggie Rogers and helped to propel her to her current level of fame and buzz. And we’ve been fans of incredibly gifted NoMBe for well over two years, and now Pharrell is heavily touting his horn, too. In all seriousness though, I kid, I’m sure Pharrell, who has a knack for finding talent, picks up on these amazing artists in a myriad of ways far removed from our little corner of the interwebs. I’m infinitely glad he’s hopped on the NoMBe train though. Pharrell describes the Los Angeles based artist’s music as “…for the subconscious… He writes and produces dream sequences.” This is never more apparent than on Can’t Catch Me, the latest chapter in NoMBe’s monthly singles series leading up to his highly anticipated debut album. We’re literally transported to a different time period, a parallel universe, by this funky 60′s soul piece that features LA art rockers New Mystics. Woozy upbeat and snap-tastic spicy Can’t Catch Me really can’t be caught… You’ll want to tap your feet and snap your fingers as you run after this virile driving dazzler. It rushes forth with such feral passion. Can’t Catch Me was personally chosen by Pharrell as the theme song for new HBO documentary Outpost. Grab the song from iTunes, here.

It normally takes me a few episodes to ease into a new television show and figure out whether I like it or not, but it’s obvious by now that there’s something much addicting about the rock & roll, sex, and drugs of HBO’s intensely riveting Vinyl. Of course, all the classic and new music in the show give it a huge boost, too. English rockers Royal Blood reveal a brand new song this week which will make its appearance on Vinyl on the show’s next episode. “Where Are You Now?” is electric, a chunky riff heavy dose of barbarous Royal Blood garage rock bliss. Royal Blood is surely a perfect match for Richie Finestra’s wild, brutish antics. Songs from Vinyl’s premiere season, including this Royal Blood original, are available from iTunes.

Miguel – Simplethings

February 6, 2014

By now, Miguel has pretty much taken over the world as one of the leading R&B stars of the time. For those in the know, most also agree that HBO television show Girls commissions one of the best television show soundtracks every season. This season’s soundtrack boasts the likes of Beck, Cat Power, Lily Allen, and lots more, including this sultry, passionate, heavily distorted number by Miguel titled Simplethings. Swoon.

Cat Power’s Free (remixed by Gigamesh)

January 25, 2014

By now, most everyone knows that critically claimed HBO show Girls tends to boast incredible soundtracks every season. The new season will include a remix of Cat Power by awesome electronic producer Gigamesh. He takes the rocking, acoustic flavored You Are Free and creates a dizzying dance version titled Free that’s wonderfully synthy and fun.

Matt Berninger (The National) – I’ll See You In My Dreams (cover)

August 22, 2013

Oh boy, this is absolutely delightful. Boardwalk Empire is one of my favorite cable television series in HBO. I can’t wait for the next season to begin soon. One of the super cool things about the show is that they sign up some pretty awesome artists to cover classic standards for the show soundtrack. Matt Berninger (of The National) did this immense cover of 1925 song I’ll See You In My Dreams by Isham Jones and the Ray Miller Orchestra. In Berninger’s version, he’s backed by Vince Giordano And The Nighthawks. The wonderful rendition is perfect. Matt Berninger’s vocals fit the song brilliantly. The song is on the Boardwalk Empire Volume 2 compilation.

OFFICIAL VID: Santigold – Girls

Sweet! Santigold released a video for her song Girls, her contribution to the epic soundtrack for the HBO show of the same name. I already liked the bouncy song a ton, but add in a fun, hip video directed by Weird Days and it takes it even further.
