We Are: The Guard, a crowd sourced music label for indie/alt pop, released a fine indie Christmas compilation featuring a bevy of artists we’ve been lauding on IHM for a very long time. We’ve already shared DENM’s cover of The Christmas Song, now let’s turn to Los Angeles by way of St. Louis progressive soul artist Brandyn Burnette’s melting rendition of Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas. In true holiday fashion, we find ourselves swaying in bliss to jazzy horns on the cozy, heartwarming R&B soul cover. Its an intimate ballad on which Brandyn Burnette’s buttery voice nuzzles the heart. Thanksgiving has passed, and jolly ol’ St. Nick is preparing for his epic night out from the North Pole. What else better to get us in the right mood than this cushy tune? I suggest a warm fire and some hot chocolate to go along with the stringy lush lullaby. We Are: The Guard’s Indie Christmas also features tracks by Alxxa, JMR, Janelle Kroll, Kyan Palmer, Micky Blue, Dog Orchestra, and Cappa. Stream/purchase, here.

Saxophone and guitar seem to be prime holiday spirits conveyors, so when German production duo Saxity unveiled their take on Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, I knew right away that this will be a fantastic sleigh ride. They enlist Georgian singer songwriter Victor Perry’s buttery quivering voice for their snazzy resplendent holiday house jam. If it’s a holiday dance party you want, particularly one that still stays very true to the heartwarming feels of the season, bump this one loud and prepare to boogie the night away. Keeping the heart warming Christmas vibes streaming with another cover of a Holiday classic. This time, velveteen songbird Daniela Andrade teams up with Dutch producer Alex Cruz on a delicate and melting rendition of Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas. I don’t know about you, but back in the days when I used to listen to Christmas songs endlessly on the radio in my parents’ car, I’d get a little tired of the same ones repeating, over and over again. These surprise covers that contemporary artists are unveiling as Christmas draws ever near have me enjoying these songs anew, in a very fresh and rejuvenated fashion. Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas is delightfully lithe and sweetly nostalgic on this jazzy lounge cover, which is also a free download on Alex Cruz’s Facebook page.

Cat Power’s Xmas Cover

Let me begin this post by disclaiming any intention of promoting or advertising for Apple. This is about the music. It’s always, and only about the music! That said, I can’t imagine a more perfect musician to cover the Sinatra and Garland classic Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas than Cat Power. Seriously, is there a more immaculate or beautiful voice for the holiday song? This may be my favorite Christmas cover of the year. It’s a peaceful, heart warming treat by a lady who’s an amazing, outspoken artist who has faced so much over the years. Chan Marshall, I love you. WE love you, many of us do. Keep on doing what you do, and thank you so much for this cover. Apple commercial or not, I don’t give a damn.

Merry Christmas!

December 26, 2011

Please excuse my absence these couple of days, though I’m usually somewhat absent on the weekends anyway. Been busy with the whirlwind known as the Holidays. Hope you are all having a lovely Christmas and though this may be belated for folks in other time zones, here’s some quiet winter music to end the jolly celebrations as we look forward to the end of year festivities next weekend.

First, I’ll share my favorite winter song, which I normally share every year via other avenues before this blog existed. It’s a tradition, so here it is again. After that, is none other than the brilliant Bright Eyes.

Best wishes to you all, and hope you ate tons of delicious food and had a memorable time with those you care about, whether it be family, friends, significant others, or just yourself (and perhaps your cat or dog). Peace out. I’ll be back with more goodies by tomorrow, you can count on that!
