Saint Sister obviously knows the way to my heart. Not only have they named their new single Twin Peaks (guess who loves that show?), but the Irish duo have more than enchanted me with their dreamy wistful, snowy ethereal aria, too. Part Beach House-like dream pop, part Daughter like atmospheric folktronica, Twin Peaks is a glacial beauty and a soft, sweet, celtic harp ensconced taste from the pair’s forthcoming debut album. Saint Sister will be on the road for much of the rest of the year as they tour  North America, Europe, Ireland, the UK, and Australia. Debut album Shape of Silence is due out later this year. Find out more about their tour from their website, here.

Let us all rejoice now that singer songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Pat Grossi, better known as Active Child, has returned! It’s been a very, very long time since we last heard from the California based artist. Active Child re-emerges with a poignant ballad named Cruel World, inspired by recent tragic events in Manchester. It’s a beautifully mournful orchestral number, of which Grossi says:

honestly struggling today. this latest one broke me 😞and i’m having trouble finding the words… but, let me wrap my arms around you . this new one is up now and i’m working on a full length for the fall but i want to give you more. i want to release more music and feel freer, so that is what i plan to do . self released under my own label ‘sun rooms recordings’ . i wrote this with the pain of the current state of affairs on my mind but with sincere hope in my heart . let’s all create more / perform more / love equally / worry less . and always, keep our heads up 👊🏻

Expressive strings and Active Child’s wispy falsettos caress our aching hearts in the sorrowful wake of this past week’s events. We’re in dire need of such comfort and assurance, and we’re grateful Active Child has provided some much needed respite.

If you haven’t heard the new Florence + The Machine songs floating about off of the Final Fantasy XV soundtrack, they’re drop dead gorgeous. They make me want to throw my arms out and cavort through the air barefoot, like the free celestial spirit that Florence Welch always seems to be. All three tracks boast plenty of fluttering harp, something I can’t help but gravitate towards. Too Much Is Never Enough is the most popular of the trio so far. Stream the dazzling beauty above. Florence waxes poetic and wistful on the breathtaking baroque pop gem as she tends to do. Also on the soundtrack is an exquisite cover of Ben E King classic Stand By Me and a cinematic twinkling orchestral aria named I Will Be, both of which can be streamed below. The whole bevy of regal splendorous tunes can be purchased as Songs From Final Fantasy XV on iTunes.

Yesterday, I encountered a French producer and musician named Alvan for the very first time. And I was utterly blown away by his musical talent. While the first song I listened to is his brand new single, Bodhyanga, featuring Velvet, it’s his not as new remix of Incubus’ Stellar that I want to dive into first and foremost. That’s right… a remix of Incubus, and it’s absolutely brilliant, too. Incubus’ Stellar is most certainly an alt rock classic, and Alvan expertly transforms it into an ethereal and airy contemporary electronic masterpiece. Odesza and Jai Wolf like effervescence combine with hypnotic entrancing deep house on this meticulously crafted, complexly layered work of art. Alvan’s Stellar involves a plethora of instruments, including piano, guitar, and harp, to create a much enchanting and kaleidoscopic dreamy atmosphere. The laws of gravity are defied as we float away to meet Alvan in a beautiful outer space full of fantasy and wonder. Download the stunning remix for free here, then dive into Alvan’s brand new original, Bodhyanga, below. Velvet turns in siren alluring vocals on the gorgeous sparkling, future effervescent gem which comes from Alvan’s next EP, Home, out July 1st via Inside Records. Pre-order from iTunes.

At first glance and listen, you might think that Emilie & Ogden were an enchanting duo, but in actuality, Emilie & Ogden is a singer songwriter from Montreal and her harp. As demonstrated on Ten Thousand, the “duo” create a divine sound together. Lush and delicate harp strings dance weightlessly around an enchantingly angelic voice. I’ve found myself very much drawn to acts that utilize harps, something I’ve noticed from loving acts like Active Child and Florence + the Machine, but the magic they bring is very much different from the graceful beauty that Emilie & Ogden does. Emilie & Ogden’s Ten Thousand is more Tori Amos and Joanna Newsom, with a touch of Feist. Ten Thousand is the lead single from Emilie & Ogden’s debut album, 10000, set to release on October 2nd. Watch the new live video released for Ten Thousand below.

There sure is a lot of good moody, sensual, trippy electronic R&B and soul music of late, but perhaps we can count Active Child in as one of the earlier influencers of this movement. After all, Pat Grossi, his harp, and his golden falsettos shined so brilliantly on debut album You Are All I See back in 2011, likely causing ripple effects on many other artists and bands. I was one of the big fans of that album, which also featured a collaboration with then emerging R&B act How To Dress Well, too. The night I caught Active Child live, opening at Mezzanine for M83, was one of the best music nights of my life, despite it being a solo outing. Two amazing acts, one small venue, and good vibes all around… magic! Active Child is releasing a soophomore album, Mercy, on June 16th via Vagrant, from which he’s already revealed some material. Today’s unleashing of Stranger brings me right back to 2011, with its enchanting harp, tense atmosphere, and soaring vocals. It reminds me why Pat Grossi made 2011 that much better of a year for me.

Los Angeles electronic artist Active Child unveiled a new shimmery song today titled She Cut Me. The dreamy track differs from most of his other songs in that his falsetto vocals are mere brief moments of the supporting background. It’s by and large an instrumental art pop song filled with Active Child’s gorgeous harp strings. The 2 plus minute cut seems far too short, almost like an intro to something else (perhaps with more vocals). She Cut Me will be on Pat Grossi’s coming new EP titled Rapor, which has yet to receive a release date. This man was absolutely incredible live when I caught him opening for M83 a couple years ago.

OFFICIAL VID: Joanna Newsom – The North Star Grassman and the Ravens (cover)

March 15, 2013

Eccentric California (freak) folk artist Joanna Newsom released this surreal, enchanting clip for her cover of The North Star Grassman and the Ravens, originally by UK folk artist Sandy Denny. It’s a gorgeous, magical, fantasy world affair. If you love owls (as so many of you seem to), you’re in for a treat. The lulling harp on the cover is beautiful and breathtaking.

OFFICIAL VID: Active Child – Johnny Belinda

July 4, 2012

Active Child’s 2011 album You Are All I See was a gorgeous, stunning showcase of  musical talent both in songwriting, vocals, and harp and other instrument playing. When I caught Pat Grossi opening for M83 earlier last year at the tiny Mezzanine in San Francisco, Active Child’s set was practically like a headlining set with the place filled up with folks arriving early to catch his magical, other wordly music and falsetto crooning. The man’s a genius, yet somehow by the end of 2011, he hadn’t received enough mention and accolade for what he had done in that album. Sometimes, some people just fall through the cracks. Sometimes, it’s just the timing. Either way, it was an absolutely fantastic sound that he created, and after some silence, he has released a video for track Johnny Belinda. The scenery in it rivals that of some Bon Iver videos. Mr. Grossi himself seems to take on a dirty, disheveled, more hairy look for the video as a wandering soul. The grandiose song carries listeners away to another land far, far away.
