By now, I’m thoroughly convinced that enigmatic producer k?d can do no wrong. He’s continued to enthrall me endlessly, track after track, week after week, and I simply can’t resist sharing whatever he puts out. While k?d’s remix of Daft Punk’s Doin’ It Right is likely one of the most brilliant edits of the year, all his other remixes are high up on the list, too. Witness his latest edit, a magnificent remix of Annabel Jones’ glossy sleek, crisp pulsing electropop gem Happy. While the original nearly had a spacious PC Music kind of vibe going on, k?d’s remix is an eternal suffusion of vibrant whirring synths and fluxing future bass. Annabel Jones manages to infuse her song with plenty of melancholic wistfulness despite the song’s name and its honeyed veneer. She sings, “tell me something happy, don’t make me sad”. That same emotion arises on k?d’s remix, but in lieu of “telling” us something happy, k?d lifts our spirits and drives away our blues with a dynamic propellant of sonic force. k?d gives us the catalyst that pushes us over a precipice. We free fall, heart pounding in pure exhilaration. Download his remix from Toneden.

Annabel Jones’ Happy is a gorgeous enchanting, sparkling crisp pop gem, though it also carries some bittersweet currents within its bouncy electronic pop. Austin’s Tim Gunter transforms the London chanteuse’s single into a chill trap anthem on his new remix, and it amplifies the moodier side of the song. Though Tim Gunter’s downtempo re-work is sublimely soothing and deeply rousing, it also carries much emotive power. The producer said he wanted to “give this song a different feeling, something you could ride around with your windows down to”. He’s certainly succeeded in creating a meditative beauty. I cruise the imaginary highways of my mind, a twilight sky spread above as I question the mysteries of happiness and life. Tim Gunter’s remix is a free download, here.

The spunky infectious electropop of Annabel Jones’ IOU has often pervaded my mind with delight in the months since its release, leaving me fondly wondering what we’d hear next from the rising pop artist from London. Annabel tones it down an iota on just revealed new single Happy, a glistening glossy pop song whose sleek and upbeat demeanor carry much bittersweet angst despite its title. Hints of SOPHIE and Hannah Diamond seep into the crisp bouncy electronic production of the song, but the truth underneath its saccharine glow is much encapsulated in the song’s lyrics… “tell me something happy, don’t make me sad” and “don’t let the dark in”. This isn’t a simple happy song. In fact, Happy is a desperate attempt to avoid pits of despair, and that attempt is much successful for its listeners, thanks to Annabel Jones’ zippy pop. Happy comes from Annabel Jones’ debut EP, Libelle, out today on iTunes.

I seem to be on a nightcore kick lately, and what else would drop in my lap but a euphoric treat named u s e d t o by an act named catphone? Thought not as frenetic and dizzying as certain other happy hardcore redolent nightcore songs I’ve been sharing and listening to, u s e d t o is still a sublimely uplifting and playful dance anthem. This colorful kaleidoscope of sound is, obviously, a pixie interpretation of Justin Bieber’s Get Used To It. As before, the source of this edit in the nightcore world is steeped in mystery. You can count on nightcore to lift your spirits, anytime, any day.

I don’t know about you, but I’m just a little bit tired from hearing Pharrell’s Happy just about everywhere, twenty four seven, everywhere I go. It’s a great tune, but seriously… it’s EVERYWHERE, used in EVERYTHING! But like Daft Punk’s Get Lucky last year, once the tune does come on, it’s hard not to start bopping along and enjoying it anyway. For an alternate take on it, and a superb one at that, stream the brand new, rich, luscious, funk and hip hop influenced remix by Montreal producer Kaytranada. Your ears will thank you.

OFFICIAL VID: Tomas Barfod – Happy (feat. Eddie Chacon)

There’s a new video out for Danish producer Tomas Barfod’s Happy, featuring Eddie Chacon, so here we are again, listening to the tune together. The synthy yet subtle house tune is the title track off Barfod’s new EP, out now on Secretly Canadian. The lyrics and undertone of the song is so dang melancholic with its forceful optimism. I dig that. Lots. It’s like a big F you to the lows. We could all use that sometimes.

Danish producer Tomas Barfod has been giving us some really dope tracks lately. A few weeks ago we heard Pulsing, featuring Nina K on vocals, a bright, sparkling, and warm electronic pop song with very Scandinavian overtones. I love it. Now, he’s teamed up with syrupy voiced Eddie Chacon on a much more sensual and R&B inflected mid tempo dance song named Happy. The song will also be on the Happy EP out February on Secretly Canadian.
