I’m always fond of dark wavey post-punky music, and it’s with great pleasure that I was keyed into a Los Angeles band by the name of BALLERINABLK (Ballerina Black). The quartet’s doomy gloomy single Brixton Rain is an immediately intoxicating gem with endless coldgaze, new wave flavored, Depeche Mode evoking alt flair. There’s also some delicious NIN industral vibe near the end of the track as well as Radiohead like sound. The single drops officially on May 5. The self described mope-rock and grave wave band has many more tasty treats on their Soundcloud, having released their first full length Cattle Arithmetic back in 2010 and several EPs to date. Off of their EP Svart is the synthpop leaning gem Sauves Grey, which you can stream below.

So what happens when you mix Kaskade and Deadmau5 with some “witch house”? Something like this, a remix of Kaskade and Deadmau5’s Move For Me by bewitching electronic act White Ring! Actually, the end result is nowhere as hazy and witchy as I’d expected. I wouldn’t mind a little more darkness and slowing down/distortion of the beats and vocals. It’s still a wonderful remix that adds that signature heavier, creepier feel to the track. I’m more into this kind of sound than un-remixed Kaskade these days, which sometimes, when not paying close attention, starts to sound too similar to most of the popular American house stuff flooding the machine due to the American EDM craze. Hmm. Now, I’m craving for some truly dark, distorted, choppy witch house!

oOoOO’s Headphone Highlights session

March 21, 2012

Yes, I’m doing a complete 180 from the last post. oOoOO did an awesome session for Redbull Music Academy Radio. Listen to the dark, choppy, screwy set below along with some description from oOoOO himself. And here’s the description on Redbull Music Academy’s website:

Yeah, okay, we got it – witchhouse was meant to be a joke, so was zombie wave and downtempo crunk. But, mind you, oOoOO is serious business. With a sharp ear for dreamy dark pop melodies, Swishahouse grooves and heavy bass action, Frisco representative oOoOO (just say ‘OH’) caused excitement and awe just as his stage name would suggest. Starting out as a punk band guitar slinger, young Christoph Dexter Greenspan got sucked in by the mysterious impact of early Wu-Tang, and the combination of dirty drum loops and ghostly apparitions stuck with him for good. Fooling around with the screwed & chopped aesthetics of the Dirty Dirty, elements of goth and shoegaze, oOoOO kick-started a proper hype with what was once dubbed “dirge-disco, like Chic on downers”. His self-named debut EP saw the light of day in 2010 on quality imprint Tri Angle where his next release, ‘Our Loving Is Hurting Us’, is in the pipeline for Spring 2012. In this episode of Headphone Highlights, oOoOO deciphers the main influences of his soundtrack for a decelerated youth.

I don’t take witch house as a joke. Perhaps the name of the genre started as a joke, but I have no qualms continuing to call that stuff by this name. I like that name. Sue me.<!–

OFFICIAL VID: Butterclock – Hustling feat. oOoOO

March 19, 2012

I actually saw this late last night, and as much as it delighted me that there is now a quirky official music video for Hustling, I was lazy to post. Sorryyyy. Here it is though, in all its glorious dark, witchy, heavy, synthy goodness! Now, if only I could see oOoOO and Butterclock live together. I’ve seen oOoOO with no Butterclock.

Searching for some darkness

September 27, 2011

Was craving something a little more on the dark ambient side, so ended up searching for some witch house videos. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to find the latest witch house stuff? I can’t seem to find any good sites or channels for it, and it’s not easy to find newer stuff, I often end up listening to the stuff from a year or two ago.

CRIM3S’ New Flesh is awesome, I just love that droning heavy dark sound.

And here’s some M△S▴C△RA!

This is a little less edgy, but Daisuke Tanabe has some awesome stuff… and it’s a more chill way to finish up the post and visit dream land soon. Though I’m still craving good witch house and have been trying to find more gems for awhile now… ahh. Any suggestions? =)

From trance to dubstep to… what’s next? Somehow this shift of genres makes sense.. WITCH HOUSE! I previously shared Salem’s King Night before, the song is great and a good example of the genre. But today, an official music video has been released. Watch! Listen! Enjoy!

Here’s a new track from The Soft Moon titled Total Decay. Ahh, there ya go, there’s some true darkness. The Soft Moon is another local artist (San Francisco) on the rise. Enjoy and marinate in the heaviness!
