Here’s a very unexpected but much appreciate collaboration that surfaced today. California hip hop act Gangrene, made up of The Alchemist and Oh No, let loose a swanky, retro track named Play It Cool featuring Earl Sweatshirt and, surprisingly, Samuel T. Herring of my beloved Future Islands. The song is off Gangrene’s new album The Alchemist and Oh No Present: Welcome to Los Santos, out April 21st. The album is inspired by the video game Grand Theft Auto V, and it really does feel like I’m in the wild world of the game while listening to the song. Sam’s deep vocals are a much welcome treat.

OFFICIAL VID: NO – There’s A Glow

March 31, 2014

Los Angeles indie rock band NO is certainly the grand champion today when it comes to coolness factor, thanks to their Grand Theft Auto inspired music video for single There’s A Glow. Who hasn’t played GTA at some point or another in their lives? Okay, maybe some people haven’t, but I sure have. Replete with the violence and brutality that the video game is known for, the video has already racked up many views in just one day. Smart move, NO! Ready for NO to really explode in the scene, kids? I knew when I first heard this band they were going to be huge some day. There’s A Glow is a brooding gem off NO’s recent debut album El Prado, which boasts endless great, moody tunes, some of which certainly remind me a lot of The National and Matt Berninger. The song is one of my faves off the album, along with Leave The Door Wide Open.

Colorado indie electronic act The Chain Gang of 1974 are prepared to release their fourth full length album Daydream Forever in 2014 with production by members of M83 and Foster The People. While people are waiting for that release, they can listen to the band’s contribution to the impressive Grand Theft Auto V soundtrack. Sleepwalking will also be on the coming album. There’s an obvious M83 quality to the dreamy, beautiful track. There’s also a delicious, copious amount of New Wave flavor to the electropop tune with its highly infectious chorus.

That little video game named Grand Theft Auto V has one intense, amazing soundtrack. In fact, it has a soundtrack THREE volumes long, filled with the likes of Wavves, Twin Shadow, FlyLo, DJ Shadow, Toro Y Moi, A$AP Rocky, Yeasayer, Dan Croll, Tyler the Creator, and so many more. Oh, let’s not forget about Clams Casino! His contribution to the soundtrack is a sick production titled Crystals. It’s sinister, hazy, heavy, and all around SICK. It’s exactly what I hoped for from the talented producer. Stream it above.

OFFICIAL VID: The Hics – Tangle

September 20, 2013

New London six piece act The Hics easily show they are one to keep an eye on with their gorgeous, soulful electronic song Tangle. The song, which is the title track off their new EP out right now, is a resplendent, intoxicating jam filled with spacious echoes and lush, trippy fluidity. In The Hics’ music, you can find eclectic elements that bring to mind many popular bands of the moment, including London Grammar, Daughter, The xx, and Rhye. However, The Hics’ have a more jazzy feel to their music, as can be heard in another one of their songs, the smoky Cold Air, which is featured on the new Grand Theft Auto V soundtrack. In fact, their music seems more “artsy” and experimental electronic than pop. Watch the video for Tangle and listen to Cold Air below.

Lately, Twin Shadow released a ton of covers. Today, he finally gives us something new and original. We have Grand Theft Auto to thank for that, of all things. Old Love/New Love is Twin Shadow’s contribution to GTA V’s soundtrack, and it’s a scintillating, upbeat synthpop tune with some disco flair and George Lewis, Jr’s usual new wave/retro style. It’s an anthemic synthpop track that’ll get your head bopping and feet tapping.
