Our long time loves, Portugal. the Man, deserved every bit of the Grammy they won for their wildly successful hit single Feel It Still, which we immediately named as one of 2017′s best songs when it first surfaced last March. I do, however, feel conflicted over the fact that the Grammy Awards chose not to include any performances by Portugal. the Man, or by The War On Drugs or The National, either, despite their respective Grammy wins. In fact, there was barely any time set aside for rock music and alt music at all! But we’re still incredibly happy about the wins. Let’s celebrate by watching Portugal. the Man’s music video for their latest single off phenomenal 2017 album Woodstock (the Alaska natives’ eighth full length). Keep On is as much a swaggering brawler of a psych funk inflected alt banger as pretty much every other track on Woodstock. Its edgy video offers a more than ample amount of kinky latex, among other things. Catch Portugal. the Man on tour, details can be found, here. WOODSTOCK can be found, here.

When Elderbrook and Camelphat’s Cola first surfaced last year, I immediately labelled it as one of the year’s best electronic tracks, even though we weren’t close to halfway through 2017 yet. Cola has since been nominated for a Grammy for best dance/electronic track, and we’ll be finding out in a few short hours if Elderbrook and Camelphat get to snag that trophy for their incredible electronic masterpiece. It seems only fitting that we cheer them on and celebrated Cola with this brilliant remix by who else, but magnificent ZHU. He gives Cola the trademark ZHU workover, a visceral pumping, torrid smoldering deep house styled edit, permeated with slick buttery cooing. Cola has never been more sexy. The remix is out now on Big Beat. Stream/download, here, then tune in to the Grammys tonight to root for the original. London based multi-instrumentalist and producer Elderbrook will be headlining Popscene in San Francisco on February 15th next month. It’s a can’t miss show, and I can’t wait to dance to Cola. Tickets and more info can be found, here.

Las Vegas alt rock band Imagine Dragons and Texas R&B sensation Khalid have been having an immense year. Imagine Dragons released their third studio album Evolve to great success and acclaim, Khalid released his debut album American Teen, and they’re both up for some well deserved Grammys. If you happened to tune into the American Music Awards this year, you likely caught the two acts performing together on stage. The medley they dropped on us live is now an official single, and we can now enjoy a studio recording of Imagine Dragons and Khalid’s Thunder / Young Dumb & Broke, an immaculate conjoining of the two hit songs. The punchy mashup is a great way to cap off 2017 for the two projects as we look ahead to Grammy night in early 2018. The single is available, here.

If you haven’t heard about this, you’ve seriously been living under a rock for the past day or so. At the Grammys last night, one of the best performances happened to be a collaboration between mega popular Vegas alt rockers Imagine Dragons (amazing how huge they’ve become!) and red hot rapper Kendrick Lamar. In fact, ID and K-Dot’s new version of Radioactive together was so popular that they laid down a recording of it today. Stream it above. It’s such a power tune and power match up. FIERCE.

Did y’all catch Frank Ocean’s performance at the Grammys?

February 12, 2013

The quality of this video kinda sucks, as the Grammys usually clamps down hard on video shares on Youtube, but this was something many people tried to upload. Frank Ocean may not have won best new artist despite having a great shot at it, but he did take one Grammy away and up the cool factor majorly with his performance of Forrest Gump. I hope some of how cool this was can carry through the low quality video.

OFFICIAL VID: Rihanna – Stay feat. Mikky Ekko

February 12, 2013

I guess Riri planned ahead to release her official video for new single Stay after the debut at the Grammys last night. Did you guys notice who’s featured on the song and who was singing live on stage last night with Rihanna? He faded into the shadows after the song was over, but like I said, Mikky Ekko is a next big thing. He won’t be in the shadows anymore soon enough. I’m still a big fan of his Clams Casino produced song Pull Me Down and have raved about him a number of times on here since last fall. Get ready for it all to culminate! Stay is a lovely pop ballad. And again, Mikky Ekko reminds me of Ryan Tedder with his vocals. The simple, stark video was filmed in one take.

Purity Ring’s New S0ulja Boy Cover!

February 11, 2013

What a MONDAY this is turning out to be! Thank you, music machine! Canadian indie electronic duo Purity Ring dropped something new too! The future pop act covered S0ulja Boy’s Grammy (pun intended for last night’s festivities?), and anything Purity Ring creates or touches puts a great big smile on my face. The excellent cover is more straightfoward and light for Purity Ring, missing some of the heavier bass and witchy glitchiness of their original work, but it’s still more than welcome in my books! They’re going on tour again this Spring, and tickets are quickly selling out. I’ve seen them live in a small venue, but may have to hit them up yet again this time around.
