By fortuitous chance, we encountered an enigmatic production project on Soundcloud the other day named DIVINE. As you’ve probably figured out from following IHM in the past, this music head is incredibly fond of the dark and haunting. DIVINE’s music is just that… it’s witchy and gothy, ominous yet euphoric. In fact, this mysterious project has gone and remixed Purity Ring’s rendition of HEALTH’s Life, and I couldn’t be happier with the ghostly droning, spectral humming results. DIVINE is a fine discovery just before Halloween hits us in just over a week from now. For another taste from the project, stream Haunt You below, and revel in its glitchy pulsing, chime tinkling umbral beauty.

BICEP, a project helmed by Belfast-born, London-based duo Matt McBriar and Andy Ferguson, just released their eponymous debut album last Friday, and it’d be criminal not to take a prolonged moment to extol their captivating electronica. The duo’s sound is founded on the blueprint of classic house, techno, electro, and Italo disco, but morphed and transformed such that it couldn’t be anything else but BICEP. Album track Vale is a dusky hypnotic, restless thrumming spectacular that takes us on a journey of euphoria and catharsis. Hints of UK house, garage, and R&B season the sublime track. The pair also released a music video for AURA last week, another stand out cut from their self titled full length. Watch the visualizer below as you dance away to its dark techno and gothy trance brilliance, much reminiscent of some of Crystal Castles and TR/ST’s production, but in a more uplifting and ecstatic manner. The songs, and BICEP’s debut EP, are available from iTunes, here.

I’m still reeling from the news that just surfaced regarding how Johnny Jewel destroyed tens of thousands of CDs and vinyl after he had a near death experience a couple years ago. Those records were imprinted with that long awaited, highly anticipated new Chromatics album Dear Tommy, whose release date has been long delayed while the band has been apparently re-recording and perfecting the release. Though we’re still waiting for Dear Tommy, we get to enjoy some of Johnny Jewel’s production in HEAVEN’s It’s Not Enough. The song is this Italians Do It Better signed electronic band’s first single, and it comes with a mysterious video whose aesthetic goes perfectly the world’s fresh obsession with Twin Peaks and David Lynch. It’s Not Enough’s droopy darkwave and lavish synthcore is ghostly and foggy, gossamer and wispy… There’s no way this twisted 80′s heart can resist HEAVEN and their first taste from a debut EP.

Gothy electro rockers HEALTH have been silent since their 2015 album Death Magic, so it’s with great pleasure that I encountered a brand new track from the trio this week. Dark whirring Euphoria, despite being an original, arrives as part of HEALTH’s new DISCO 3 remix album. The other tracks that flesh out the album include remixes by the likes of Haxan Cloak, Preoccupations, Purity Ring, and more. It’s obvious this is an album I need to check out, stat. HEALTH’s video for the spine tingling tune is made up of footage from the band’s past. DISCO 3 is out now on iTunes via Loma Vista.

Fans of Austra’s gothy dark synthpop (like myself) couldn’t be happier last month when the Toronto four piece announced their next album and presented us with a brand new single. That glacial baroque treat has received an official remix treatment by Ikonika, a UK producer whom Katie Stelmanis considers amongst her favorites. Utopia gets an inky dark makeover replete with ominous sawing synths and droopy somber beats. Ikonika’s remix is truly a haunting splendorous affair. My twisted heart can’t get enough of this spectral edit. Austra’s third album Future Politics is due to arrive January 20th via Domino. I already have my ticket locked in for Austra’s show at the Mezzanine in San Francisco on February 11th.

Fans of Austra’s dark wavey, gothy mesmeric synthpop are rejoicing today at the news of a brand new album. The Toronto four piece will be releasing their third full length, Future Politics, on January 20th. To double our excitement and joy, Austra has also unveiled a brand new single via an immaculate music video. It’s been a very long time since we’ve heard from Austra, and it’s such a welcome delight to hear Katie Stelmanis’ pristine voice once again. Utopia’s glacial baroque pop and dreamy haunting electropop leave me incredibly excited for Austra’s next album.

My dark twisted heart can’t help but be drawn into the gloomy morose, sad bewitching world of Dog Orchestra all over again as the Swedish duo serenades us with new song Broke. They’re more ghostly than ever on the slow coiling electropop number, which carries some of the ominous synthcore allure of that Stranger Things theme song I’ve been obsessing over lately. Along these lines, Dog Orchestra’s Broke also evokes TR/ST, Johnny Jewel, Disasterpeace, and so many other darkwave music projects I love. Broke is the latest reveal from Dog Orchestra’s upcoming EP.

I love deliciously dark and super gothy electronic pop music, so when I heard PH1LOPHOB1A, a debut single from unsigned Melbourne, Australia indie artist Eden Swan, I was immediately enthused and overjoyed. The dramatic darkwave and synthpop gem reminds me of so many other artists I love, like The Knife, Bjork, Grimes, TRUST, Crystal Castles, Aphex Twin, Zola Jesus, and even Prodigy. Philophobia is defined as “the fear of falling in love”, and there’s certainly an edginess to this song that strongly expresses anxiety and deep foreboding. The song is up for free grabs via Eden Swan’s mailing list signup, here.
