I’m still kicking myself for not walking up to Christine and the Queens to say hi after I caught her very first performance on North American soil at SXSW a few years ago. She was hanging out by the stage after dazzling us with her dance moves and irresistible persona. I could have, I SHOULD have, gone up and said hello. After all, I’d made it a priority to be there for that performance, after falling in love with the French artist’s imaginative music and forward-thinking, convention-breaking music. She’s since become a global sensation, and now, Christine and the Queens is back with long awaited, highly anticipated new music. Girlfriend, a collaboration with Dâm-Funk, is a slick and chic tribute to G-funk that also feels very 90′s R&B. With her new music, Héloïse Letissier is stepping away from her acclaimed debut album Chaleur Humaine, towards what’s described as a more upbeat, tougher, and more minimalist sound. Girlfriend questions identity and plays with the performance of gender, and how the codes of “masculinity” are disrupted if the player isn’t a man.

“I initially set out to smash against macho culture and macho men,” says Letissier. “I became obsessed with this idea of the macho man, and still being a woman. What does it mean if I’m this figure, and I’m a woman? Does it make me an aberration? Is it joyful?“ The song, too, is overwhelmed with desire. “I felt I had to address female desire and it’s diversity,” she says. “How sometimes it’s blacked out or ignored. It’s still something quite suspicious or slightly dirty. I felt like it was important to be more unapologetic about that. There are hints of nights spent having sex and coming back covered in sweat. Like a male figure, the young hero who has love stories, and comes back in the morning and his friends are like: ‘What happened to you?’ I want to be that.” Listen to the French version of Girlfriend below, entitled Damn, dis-moi. An extensive world tour begins this fall, details can be found, here. Girlfriend is available, here.

“Repeat repeat” just about sums up what I’d like to do with this charming ditty. It’s also the name of the band responsible for its 60s evoking saccharine surf pop, sort of. Frontman Jared Corder, drummer Andy Herrin, and vocalist/keys player Kristyn Corder are *repeat repeat. The three musicians, based out of Nashville, TN, make pop songs rooted in the spirit of both coasts. They mix California surf culture and New York street smarts into their music. *repeat repeat’s new single Girlfriend is sun kissed guitar pop stratified with a dark layer of entangling garage rock and chunky punk, and it’s utterly addictive, a sweet yet biting confection. Girlfriend is out now on Dangerbird Records.

It was but a few weeks ago that I caught one of the best double headlining shows of the year so far, one that featured both Mura Masa and Nao. Both were superb and Nao easily proved with her spectacular stage presence and her music that she’s well worthy of the growing buzz that surrounds the British artist. Not long afterwards, Nao revealed Girlfriend, a beauty of an electro R&B slow burner from her forthcoming debut album. Careful, this one’s a real seductive slinker, yet so glistening smooth and future sleek. It’s going to send waves of electricity through you and make you really pine for your bae on this marvelous Friday. Nao’s debut album For All We Know will be out on July 29th.

The things you find raiding fellow music lovers’ soundclouds. 19 Year Old Producer from the U.K., R.O.M, makes music you can “ask a girl out to”. I can imagine this in a Jazz Lounge or even in a candle lit room when you’re just trying to chill by yourself or with a special someone. It’s a “ROMderful” introduction for me to this talent Birmingham artist.

London’s Mind Enterprises has thrilled me with his disco pop a number of times in the past already, yet new song Girlfriend is my first share of his music here on IHM. Let’s not mull over that disastrous fact for too long, as it’s making me blush with embarrassment. Instead, let’s allow Andrea Tirone to whisk us away on a fluttering journey of elation with his weightlessly breezy and warmly shimmering new tune. Lush and opulent Girlfriend is taken from Mind Enterprises’ upcoming debut album, Idealist, out February 5th via Because Music.

Dark synths and new wavey Depeche Mode and The Cure like vocals, with a smattering of Hot Chip electronic snappiness and some Bloc Party punkiness? What’s there not to love about German band Say Yes Dog’s new single Girlfriend? The trio from Berlin have been keeping themselves busy these past few years to work on a debut full length album, and this first taste of the record proves that time was well spent. Girlfriend is a thrilling, intoxicating dance punk meets synthpop jam.

OFFICIAL VID: Icona Pop – Girlfriend

Time for some sun drenched fun. The new video for Icona Pop’s latest single Girlfriend starts off very much reminding me of the video for Nights Like This, still my favorite video and possibly favorite song by the Swedish duo. However, this one doesn’t have the dark twisted undertones of that clip, it’s a straightforward road trip video and warm, fuzzy, electropop song that’ll make you want to say “awww” as you delve into the close bond between Caroline and Aino. It’s the obvious go to anthem for those girls night outs or fun days hanging out with your BFF doing nothing in particular but enjoying each others’ company. Yep. I’m playing this when my BFF visits back in the Bay next. Sniffle. This makes me miss her. Screw it. I’m sending it to her. Icona Pop’s sure to be wildly successful debut album “This Is… Icona Pop” comes out on September 24. It’s going to be a banging, catchy listen filled with big hits. I only wish it could come out right NOW so we can spend some of our summertime dancing to it under the blue skies with our bosom buddies.
