I’ve never been able to resist Drake and Rihanna’s Take Care, largely due to the fact that it heavily utilizes and samples Jamie xx and the late great Gil-Scott Heron’s I’ll Take Care Of U, a song I’ll adore for all eternity. Drake puts the song to good use on mega hit Take Care, which I unexpectedly re-encountered today in a very different form, thanks to this fantastic remix by German production duo GAMPER & DADONI. The producers take those Jamie xx Balearic house beats and amps them up, infusing the track with an extra plentiful dose of breezy house vibrancy. It’s impossible not to get up and move to this laid back deep dance treat. Download the remix for free from MGM Records, here.

Jamie xx DJ set

June 21, 2013

Everyone’s beloved x filled band has been touring in support of their album Coexist lately. Their European leg of the tour was designed the “Night + Day” series with an endless array of other amazing talents joining the lineup. During their stop in Berlin, Jamie xx spun an awesome 30 minute DJ set. Red Bull Music Academy has posted it for us to stream! Thank you, Red Bull! The set features the likes of the late Gil Scott-Heron, Florence and the Machine, the xx (of course), and tons more goodies.

Angel Haze

July 5, 2012

Female rappers are going STRONG these days, and the scene is only getting stronger. I just learned about another NY female rapper, Angel Haze. The fresh faced young newcomer is releasing a debut EP this July named Reservation, and here’s one of the trax off that EP, the awesome New York. The song samples the late Gil Scott-Heron’s New York Is Killing Me. Her staccato flo over the sampling works perfectly and left me grinning ear to ear like a dimwit at my work desk. Watch out for some dirty lyrics, as always, be wary at work of what you play loudly. After a little research, it looks like Angel started off as a poet, uploading videos of herself onto youtube. She has some mad potential if New York is a sign of things to come.

OFFICIAL VID: Drake – Take Care feat Rihanna

April 7, 2012

Fresh off the press, here’s Drake’s official video for his song Take Care featuring Rihanna. I still take some offense (not personally) that The XX (well Jamie XX actually), whom I love, receives NO mention whatsoever as being the main act sampled for the song (HEAVILY sampled). I might even question using the word “sample” in this situation. It should have “featuring Jamie XX” somewhere in there. Or even a mention in descriptions for the song or some shout out should be deserved. Come on, now! Other than that, it’s not a bad use of I’ll Take Care Of You. The big names get to not give props to who they use to make their hits. It’s a problem with mainstream hip hop, especially when artists are already famous. And where’s the shout out to the late Gil-Scott Heron who is featured in the song as a integral part of I’ll Take Care Of You??? The industry owes so dang much to him!

Florence covered Drake’s Take Care!

November 25, 2011

*gasp* Wow there’s some good stuff getting floated out after the slow past day or two! Yep, Florence and the Machine covered Drake’s ever popular Take Care on BBC Radio 1!  Let’s not forget Take Care also features Rihanna AND it heavily samples from Jamie XX’s work with the late Gil Scott-Heron on the song I’ll Take Care Of You. And it’s produced by Jamie XX. Oh boy. Connect all the dots and see how many artists this really involves! Flo adds her signature sound to the track, making it more baroque and stringy. And I LOVE it! Perhaps more so than the Drake original, which, as much as I do know is brilliant, is not as up my alley compared to these other types of sounds and approaches. Also, GOOD for her for taking the time beforehand to credit and thank the artists involved in the production of this song! This cover sure sounds more like the Gil Scott-Heron/Jamie XX song Drake sampled, more so than Drake’s version despite being a cover of Drake’s version. Perhaps once you take away the R&B and hip hop elements all you have left are the similarities. That really belies how much Drake’s Take Care depended on Jamie XX and Gil Scott-Heron after all. Due credit, due credit. Let’s remember that. 😉

I’ll Take Care of You

I’ll Take Care of You – I’ll – of You = Take Care. Take Care = the new Drake album and title song. Here’s a little bit of info that I think people are not going to know if they aren’t into music the way some of us are, since so far all I see is “Drake feat Rihanna – Take Care”.

Take Care is formulated from I’ll Take Care of You. It heavily samples the amazing song from Jamie XX and the late Gil Scott-Heron. I absolutely love the song and the gritty video about a single mother and her Olympic boxing dreams. I agree Drake does a nice job with the “vocals remix” by overlaying great original singing over it, but I just hope people do remember where this song originally came from. And without it, Drake would not have his title track and perhaps the concept behind his new album which is about to BLOW UP in the world. He’s about to become bigger than he ever been, that’s for sure.

Just wanted to share that tidbit and share the new Drake track, and then the ORIGINAL Jamie XX/Gil Scott-Heron piece of amazing music below. Here ya go…

Oh boy I love that song.

RIP, Gil Scott-Heron…
