Common Holly drew our attention last month when the singer songwriter from Montreal unleashed a raw and earnest, eloquent and understated indie rock song named Nothing. We found ourselves immediately falling for her finely etched music, which reminded us of Julien Baker and EMA’s earlier music. Imagine our surprise when Common Holly, aka Brigitte Naggar, returned today with a cover of quintessential Frank Ocean classic, Thinkin’ Bout You. There was no way we could’ve predicted this turn of events, but Common Holly’s rendition of the Channel Orange hit is nothing short of brilliant. An array of guitars both dreamy and gnarled pepper the indie rock cover. Her harmonic vocals are like wispy tendrils layered into each other, springing forth from a burbling brook of shape-shifting strings and clattering beats. Common Holly’s cover is her contribution to Amazon’s Valentine’s themed Love Me/Love Me Not playlist series.

Droopy seductive late night vibes envelop us on I Might. The succulent bouncing future R&B jam comes from Pasadena’s esta., who’s turned Calvin Harris’ I Might featuring Frank Ocean & Migos on its head. The Soulection producer has given the track a choppy luxuriant, sexy churning makeover. He states that he did the edit for fun. esta. has a plethora of stellar groovers on his Soundcloud, here. He’s also produced for Alina Baraz in the past.

I’d imagine remixing a Frank Ocean track takes some guts and bravado. It’s like attempting to set loose in the wild an edit of a book of the Bible, or at least to some Frank Ocean fans, it might feel that way. Philadelphia’s Louis Futon created his own sonic gospel when he set out to remix Frank Ocean’s Solo. The flip he’s given us is pure genius, a soulful, funky affair that pays homage to the Motown vibes of the 70′s yet updates that vintage sound with the electrifying hybrid dance and hip hop feels that we often fall for from the likes of Big Wild, Griz, 20syl, and Pretty Lights. Louis Futon’s re-interpretation of Solo is a free download, here.

It’s a cross Atlantic affair as England’s Flo Morrissey and Virginia’s Matthew E. White unleash their covers album, “Gentlewoman, Ruby Man” on Glassnote. The collection of imaginative re-incarnations includes a full on brilliant rendition of Frank Ocean standard Thinking Bout You. Plucky folk pop meets rich, jazzy rock on the pair’s stunning take on still one of the best Frank Ocean songs ever. I fall in love with the song all over again.

With a name like Cafe Disko, you might assume you’re about to be assailed by juicy plump disco house, but we’ve already learned from Cafe Disko and Neonhund’s collaborative remix of Major Lazer’s Cold Water earlier this year that we should never make such uninformed inferences. The production project, who describe their music as “latte and chill”, offer up a transcendental cover of Frank Ocean’s Ivy. There’d be nothing better right now than to make myself a milky frothing latte to go with this visionary re-imagining of the song. Cafe Disko dresses Ivy in enchanting future bass and chill trap threads ornately adorned with celestial flickers and sweet honeyed vocals. Cafe Disko’s Ivy is a free download, here.

It was but a couple days ago that I was marveling over Vasta’s courage and skillfulness in adapting Frank Ocean’s White Ferrari into a deep house dance track, but today, we must also pay our respects to a sensational remix of the track by UK producer Alex Metric. This serene coasting White Ferrari dips deep into a vast and profound sea. The deeper we go, the more humbled we are by the great expanse still shrouded in mystery ahead of us. If there is a meaning to life, and we are not all nihilists, it just might be found in Alex Metric’s sprawling remix.

It takes guts to remix a Frank Ocean track, much less one of the stellar songs from new album Blonde, but Florida’s Vasta hits it right on the mark with his magnificent edit of White Ferrari. Vasta explains that Blonde took him to another place in a way very few pieces of music ever have, and White Ferrari inspired him the moment he heard it. He wants us to enjoy this remix on those long rides together. Vasta’s remix is well worthy of looping on repeat during long road trips. It’s a beautifully ambient yet vividly pacing deep house approach on the brilliant tune. Download the beauty for free, here.

I know we’re all dying of thirst for new Frank Ocean, who seems to have the ability to tease us to no end with the prospect of fresh material. It seems the drought might be ending soon, considering the announcement of Boys Don’t Cry on Friday, but then again, it’s Frank Ocean. For all we know, Friday might come with merely another delay. As we cross our fingers and toes in hopes that Friday will be epic, Goldwash keeps us sane with a dark and sultry cover of Thinkin Bout U. The Baltimore based musician envelops us with his brand of heady existential funk, a droopy viscous pool of feverish hot, emotive broiling lust.

It’s July 102 Frank Ocean and still no new album like was promised earlier in the year. We’re soooo far into July that an old Tori Kelly video for her skin-tingling cover of ‘Thinkin About You’ has popped up on my facebook.

Major Lazer’s Lean On is one of all time favorites from the production act. Not only is it insanely catchy, but it also features the spunky mettle and thrilling vocals of Danish songstress MØ, an IHM favorite for a couple of years now. I was naturally superbly elated when I encountered this new collaboration between Major Lazer and MØ, a cover of Frank Ocean’s Lost! Major Lazer and MØ should just put out an album together, if you ask me, but until they decide to do so, I’ll be jamming to this fresh re-imagining of Lost. They manage to make the song a breezy, sassy tune that brings in plenty of their dancehall, reggae, and electropop charisma. Download the cover here.
