I count myself extremely lucky that I happened to walk in on a Formation set at SXSW last year. They were playing the La Blogotheque stage in an enclosed area outdoors at Hype Hotel, and I found myself immediately drawn to the sound that was emanating from behind its glossy windows. Imagine my delight when I walked over to find the siblings from South London tearing it up with their disco grooving dance rock tunes. I have no idea if Formation will be in Austin again this year, as they’ll be releasing their debut album Look At The Powerful People on March 24th via Rough Trade. We get to relish in the new video they just dropped for A Friend and look forward to the record, so I really can’t complain either way. A Friend is a rambunctious strutting, tightly wound jam permeated with wavy synths and ebullient percussion, ever alluring cowbells included.

I’ve been a fan of Formation since I first encountered the London based duo through a share of their music by Shura on social media. As luck would have it, I ended up catching a set by the duo without planning to when I was in Austin for SXSW last month (I had no idea they were in town). I was at Hype Hotel for a showcase, and unbeknownst to me, La Blogotheque, a live music series I’ve been in love with for years, was in charge of curating an enclosed outdoors stage which featured Formation at the opportune moment I happened to be there. Though it was hard to see them through the glare of the box like apparatus they were performing from, they easily transfixed me, and the crowd around me, with their funky dance rock songs. Today, the duo on the rise released a music video for jaunty new single Pleasure, its fidgety foot work and shaky cinematics a fine fit for the restlessly strutting, tightly wound jam. Pleasure is a richly pounding thriller, a fervent and flushed spectacular. It also boasts plenty of cowbell, always a plus in my book.

I first encountered Formation’s music earlier this year thanks Shura, who shared their song Hangin on her Facebook profile. The sibling duo from South London had me eagerly lapping up their funky dance punk sound immediately with the track. The duo will be releasing a new EP named Under The Tracks on November 20th, and they have me lapping away again with cool disco hued dance rock jangler All The Rest Is Noise, for which they’ve released a splashy music video. Formation are touring in the EU and UK through November.

I have to credit Shura with this fantastic discovery, because I stumbled upon Formation’s Hangin after she shared the tune on her Facebook page (on which I was lurking around, because she released that fantastic tune White Light earlier today). Hangin is a wicked funky dance punk song from London based Formation. In some ways, the duo reminds me of a more alt rocking Disclosure, minus all the booming bass and filthy synths, with a touch of Jungle’s disco, a helping of Talking Heads, and dashes of early Basement Jaxx and psychedelic Jagwar Ma. The killer tune is out on iTunes via Meno Records, though I can easily imagine this being something from legendary DFA Records.
