Swedish folk troupe First Aid Kit, a favorite of ours for such a long time, have been drumming up a fresh new flood of buzz lately with the songs they’ve revealed from their next album Ruins. Much of the music we’ve heard so far from the album have been extra rustic compared to some of their prior material, but new song Fireworks takes a bit of a turn. It’s a melting dream pop flavored canticle, accompanied by a heavily nostalgic video that pays tribute to the 80s with its idyllic prom setting. Fireworks is without a doubt my favorite new FAK song off Ruins so far, a Beach House meets Lykke Li styled ambler with ample pastoral charm. I’ve been melting away to it since its trademark First Aid Kit harmonies came to light last Friday, and now you can, too. Ruins arrives January 19th, pre-order, here.

Both Van William’s Van Pierszalowski and First Aid Kit are busy bodies when it comes to the indie music scene. Van is known for his roles in now defunct San Francisco band Port O’Brien as well as Los Angeles based indie darlings WATERS. Swedish duo First Aid Kit, aside from winning our hearts with their endearing folk pop, have delighted us with their sweet harmonies alongside artists and bands like Conor Oberst and Bright Eyes. The two come together on Van William’s Revolution, a tender stomping earworm of a folk jangler. Despite its honeyed glow, Revolution’s soft frayed edges are dipped in melancholy. After all, the song explores the end of a relationship, but in a jaunty lush, brassy wistful fashion. Revolution is Van William’s second single, and it’ll be out September 9th on both iTunes and Spotify.

First Aid Kit cover Jack White’s Love Interruption

August 2, 2014

I try not to make it a habit to feature video clips of covers on IHM, but once in awhile, I encounter something that’s too spectacular not to be shared. Quite often, the clips are from Australia’s Triple J radio, since they have a tradition of having bands do covers live on air when they visit their studios. Today, we get to watch Swedish folk sisters First Aid Kit do a transcendental cover of Jack White’s Love Interruption. It’s perfect.

OFFICIAL VID: First Aid Kit – Stay Gold (Acoustic)

June 11, 2014

I’m super duper excited that I received Swedish folk sisters First Aid Kit’s sophomore album Stay Gold in the mail this week, though I haven’t found time to pop it in a player yet. This new video they released for the title track of the album sure prompts me to hurry up my first listen. Stay Gold is such a soaring, moving ballad, filled with poignant emotion. For the video, they perform an acoustic version of the song in sequinned cocktail dresses that somehow capture the melancholic, ephemeral qualities of their music perfectly. What is it about First Aid Kit that’s  so entrancing and magical? Is it their harmonies? Is it the sisters’ undeniable, natural beauty? Is it a certain earnestness that always seems to shine through on all of their music? Whatever it is, I’m always transfixed by their music and performances. I know this holds true for most anyone who listens to their music. I have friends who never listen to folk who, I found out, dig First AId Kit a lot. No surprise, there. Not at all.

OFFICIAL VID: First Aid Kit – My Silver Lining

May 13, 2014

I love Swedish folk sisters First Aid Kit, plus, I’m greatly looking forward to their new album Stay Gold, out June 10. I’ve already pre-ordered myself a copy. The very first taste we heard off the album last month, My Silver Lining, now has some visuals to accompany it. As always, there’s something so magnificent and captivating about the sisters strutting confidently in their beautiful dresses as they belt out their gorgeous harmonies on the lovely folk song. Barring sounding like a hipster wannabe, they get bonus points for the adorable owl in the video, too!

OFFICIAL VID: First Aid Kit – Cedar Lane

May 6, 2014

Having a pretty frenetic day that started out with a flat that needed repair, but share good music I must, so giddy up, music friends, and let’s jump into this folksy new tune from Swedish act First Aid Kit. Cedar Lane is a new taster off the sisters’ new album Stay Gold, out June 10. It’s quite the languid, twangy charmer. I always love their harmonies.
